During an energy conference in Norway, Musk remarked that \u201csome additional exploration\u201d of <a href=\"http:\/\/dailywire.com\/topic\/oil-and-gas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">oil and gas<\/a> resources \u201cis warranted at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRealistically I think we need to use oil and gas in the short term, because otherwise civilization will crumble,\u201d Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/elon-musk-says-world-still-needs-oil-gas-2022-08-29\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> reporters. \u201cOne of the biggest challenges the world has ever faced is the transition to sustainable energy and to a sustainable economy. That will take some decades to complete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many developed countries are indeed shifting their energy portfolios toward renewables and away from conventional sources. As a result, Norwegian production of oil, natural gas, and other fossil fuels reached a peak in 2004 and has steadily declined since, according to data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norskpetroleum.no\/en\/facts\/historical-production\/#annually\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Norwegian Petroleum Directorate<\/a>. More broadly, the European Union \u2014 of which Norway is not a member \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/clima\/eu-action\/climate-strategies-targets\/2050-long-term-strategy_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aims<\/a> to be \u201ca climate-neutral society\u201d by 2050 in accordance with the European Green Deal and the Paris Agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Switzerland and Germany are among several countries progressively shuttering nuclear power plants in reaction to the 2011 meltdown in Fukushima, Japan. Germany \u2014 which imported 55% of its gas from Russia before the war \u2014 will likely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/germany-poised-to-shut-down-last-nuclear-plants-despite-gas-shortage-ahead-of-winter-months\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proceed<\/a> with the scheduled closure of its three remaining nuclear facilities before the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Musk issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/elon-musk-pushes-energy-policy-for-u-s-that-would-negatively-affect-his-own-company-extraordinary-times-demand-extraordinary-measures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">similar warning<\/a> to the United States earlier this year \u2014 despite possible harm brought to Tesla, which exclusively manufactures electric cars. \u201cExtraordinary times demand extraordinary measures,\u201d he commented on social media, noting that sustainable energy solutions \u201csimply cannot react instantaneously\u201d to cope with lower energy supplies.<\/p>\n<p>The national average price of gasoline was $2.38 per gallon when President Joe Biden assumed office, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/dnav\/pet\/hist\/LeafHandler.ashx?n=PET&amp;s=EMM_EPMR_PTE_NUS_DPG&amp;f=W\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Energy Information Administration<\/a>, and increased to $3.53 per gallon by the start of the Russian invasion.
