{"id":1625706,"date":"2022-08-29T13:18:54","date_gmt":"2022-08-29T17:18:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/?p=1625706"},"modified":"2022-08-29T13:19:31","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T17:19:31","slug":"necessary-first-step-new-york-times-insists-doj-should-indict-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/necessary-first-step-new-york-times-insists-doj-should-indict-trump\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Necessary First Step\u2019: New York Times Insists DOJ Should Indict Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<aside class=\"mashsb-container mashsb-main mashsb-stretched\"><div class=\"mashsb-box\"><div class=\"mashsb-count mash-medium\" style=\"&quot;\"><div class=\"counts mashsbcount\">22<\/div><span class=\"mashsb-sharetext\">SHARES<\/span><\/div><div class=\"mashsb-buttons\"><a class=\"mashicon-facebook mash-medium mash-nomargin mashsb-noshadow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.conservativenewsdaily.net%2Fbreaking-news%2Fnecessary-first-step-new-york-times-insists-doj-should-indict-trump%2F\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"icon\"><\/span><span class=\"text\">Facebook<\/span><\/a><a class=\"mashicon-twitter mash-medium mash-nomargin mashsb-noshadow\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?text=&amp;url=https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/?p=1625706&amp;via=ConservNewsDly\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"icon\"><\/span><span class=\"text\">Twitter<\/span><\/a><a class=\"mashicon-subscribe mash-medium mash-nomargin mashsb-noshadow\" href=\"#\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"icon\"><\/span><span class=\"text\">Subscribe<\/span><\/a><div class=\"onoffswitch2 mash-medium mashsb-noshadow\" style=\"display:none\"><\/div><\/div>\n            <\/div>\n                <div style=\"clear:both\"><\/div><\/aside>\n            <!-- Share buttons by mashshare.net - Version: 4.0.47--><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/new-york-times\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Times<\/a> editorial board, in characteristic fashion, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/08\/26\/opinion\/trump-documents-jan-6-prosecute.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">attacked<\/a> former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">President Trump<\/a>, calling for him to be indicted if \u201cAttorney General Merrick Garland and his staff conclude that there is sufficient evidence\u201d to do so.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times boasts of its editorial board that is comprised of a \u201cgroup of opinion journalists whose views are informed by expertise, research, debate and certain longstanding<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>values,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2018\/opinion\/editorialboard.html?module=inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">adding<\/a> that it \u201caims to provide a consistent, independent view of the world based on time-tested institutional values.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Citing the House select committee\u2019s hearings regarding January 6, 2021 \u2014 enthusing that the Jan. 6 committee had \u201cmeticulously assembled\u201d \u201cdisturbing details\u201d of Trump\u2019s \u201cpostelection misfeasance,\u201d while insisting the American public has been \u201ctransfixed\u201d by them \u2014 The Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/08\/26\/opinion\/trump-documents-jan-6-prosecute.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accuses<\/a> Trump of having \u201croused an armed mob that stormed the Capitol and threatened lawmakers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo American president has ever been criminally prosecuted after leaving office,\u201d The Times noted, pointing out then when former President Gerald Ford pardoned Richard Nixon, he warned that prosecuting Nixon risked catalyzing \u201cugly passions\u201d and further polarization.<\/p>\n<p>Admitting \u201cthat warning is just as salient today,\u201d The Times then continues, \u201cThere is a substantial risk that, if the Justice Department does prosecute Mr. Trump, future presidents \u2014 whether Mr. Trump himself or someone of his ilk \u2014 could misuse the precedent to punish political rivals. \u2026 There is an even more immediate threat of further violence, and it is a possibility that Americans should, sadly, be prepared for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Praising Garland for being \u201cdeliberate, methodical and scrupulous,\u201d The Times added, \u201cNo matter how careful Mr. Garland is or how measured the prosecution might be, there is a real and significant risk from those who believe that any criticism of Mr. Trump justifies an extreme response.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But then The Times ignored precedent, arguing, \u201cYet it is a far greater risk to do nothing when action is called for. Aside from letting Mr. Trump escape punishment, doing nothing to hold him accountable for his actions in the months leading up to Jan. 6 could set an irresistible precedent for future presidents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Times acknowledged its past support for Trump\u2019s impeachment and removal from office, arguing that \u201cthe threat that Mr. Trump and his most ardent supporters pose to American democracy has metastasized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe used the power of his office to subvert the rule of law. If we hesitate to call those actions and their perpetrator criminal, then we are saying he is above the law and giving license to future presidents to do whatever they want,\u201d The Times claimed.<\/p>\n<p>Prospective cases the government could bring against Trump, The Times wrote, would include \u201cTrump\u2019s fraudulent efforts to get election officials in Georgia, Arizona, and elsewhere to declare him the winner even though he lost their states; to get Mr. Pence, at the Jan. 6 congressional certification of the election, to throw out slates of electors from states he lost and replace them with electors loyal to Mr. Trump; and to enlist from the Departments of Justice, Homeland Security and Defense to persuade officials in certain states to swing the election to him and ultimately stir up a mob that attacked the Capitol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Times added another charge: \u201cseditious conspiracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than 850 other Americans have already been charged with crimes for their roles in the Capitol attack,\u201d The Times wrote. \u201cIt would be unjust if Mr. Trump, the man who inspired them, faced no consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claiming Trump\u2019s actions have \u201cbrought shame on one of the world\u2019s oldest democracies and destabilized its future,\u201d The Times concluded, \u201cEven justice before the law will not erase that stain. Nor will prosecuting Mr. Trump fix the structural problems that led to the greatest crisis in American democracy since the Civil War.
