Bernie Sanders (I-VT) defended the Biden administration\u2019s decision to cancel thousands of dollars in federal student loan debt.<\/p>\n<p>Appearing on ABC\u2019s \u201cThis Week with George Stephanopoulos\u201d Sunday, Sanders rebuked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/gop-senator-blunt-bidens-student-loan-cancellation-monumentally-unfair-will-have-long-term-devastating-effect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Republicans<\/a> and vulnerable Democrats who criticized Biden\u2019s decision to unilaterally forgive up to $10,000 for most borrowers. Sanders said Biden \u201cdid the right thing\u201d and pushed for the even more radical policy of making public colleges tuition-free.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know it is shocking to some Republicans that the government, on occasion, does something to benefit working families and low-income people,\u201d Sanders said. \u201cI don\u2019t hear any of these Republicans squawking when we give massive tax breaks to billionaires, when we have an effective tax rate today, such that the 1% having a lower effective tax rate than working people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have major corporations in a given year don\u2019t pay a nickel in federal taxes,\u201d he continued.\u201d That\u2019s okay, but suddenly when we do something for working people, it is a terrible idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was in Boston last week and I was talking to nurses, and these nurses were telling me that they are working in some cases two jobs, outrageous hours partly in order to pay for the student debts that they have accumulated. So in my view, the president did the right thing, and we have got to be really thinking about higher education in general and in my view, at a time when hundreds of thousands of bright, young people can\u2019t even afford to go to college, if we\u2019re going to be competitive in a global economy, we need to make public colleges and universities tuition-free.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A number of Congressional Democrats in hotly-contested midterm races criticized Biden\u2019s student loan decision. Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/thenevadaindependent.com\/article\/cortez-masto-pushes-back-against-biden-student-loan-forgiveness-as-other-dems-cheer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Catherine Cortez Masto<\/a> (D-NV) said Wednesday that canceling debt \u201cdoesn\u2019t address the root problems that make college unaffordable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vulnerable Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/no-way-to-make-policy-democratic-congressman-rips-bidens-plan-for-student-debt-cancellation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chris Pappas<\/a> (D-NH) said Biden\u2019s decision is \u201cno way to make policy\u201d and slammed the decision for sidestepping Congress.<\/p>\n<p>And Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/vulnerable-democrats-in-swing-states-distance-themselves-from-biden-on-student-debt-cancellation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tim Ryan<\/a>\u00a0(D-OH), who is running for Senate in Ohio, said that the decision \u201csends the wrong message to the millions of Ohioans without a degree working just as hard to make ends meet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sanders rebuked his Democratic colleagues\u2019 criticism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, the truth is, in a sense that criticism is correct but the answer is not to deny help to people who cannot deal with these horrendous student debts who were delaying getting married, delaying even having children,\u201d he said. \u201cThe answer is that maybe just maybe we want to have a government that works for all working people and not just the people on top.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Far-left Sen.
