has been approved by the Office of Public Instruction of Washington (OSPI) to provide <a href=\"https:\/\/waethnicstudies.com\/professional-development-2\/\">professional development<\/a> for teachers in the state.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\"><\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/waethnicstudies.com\/professional-development-2\/\">Washington Ethnic Studies Now<\/a> founded by Castro-Gill boasts on its website, &#8220;We have developed an 18 hour professional learning series to prepare educators to teach Ethnic Studies, available as nine virtual modules, facilitated by our Executive Director, Tracy Castro-Gill.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>&#8220;Upon completion of this series, educators will be able to: begin to contextualize anti-Blackness, race, anti-Black bias, racism, and all forms of oppression at all levels (personally-mediated, institutional, and internal); 2. identify pedagogical practices that perpetuate oppression and transform their praxis into liberatory practice that is culturally sustaining and humanizing; and identify and create culturally relevant and sustaining curricula and instructional practices that directly confront oppression and coloniality.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>The website states that &#8220;WAESN is now an OSPI approved clock hour provider,&#8221; meaning educators can fulfill their professional development through the organization.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>The curriculum includes nine &#8220;modules&#8221; in the series including, <a href=\"https:\/\/waethnicstudies.com\/product\/module-1-vp\/\">Historicizing Race &#038; Contextualizing Anti-Blackness<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/waethnicstudies.com\/modules-2-9-registration\/\">Pulling the Weeds; Rooting out Whiteness in the Classroom<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/waethnicstudies.com\/modules-2-9-registration\/\">Dispelling Myths of Multiculturalism<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/waethnicstudies.com\/modules-2-9-registration\/\">&#8220;Isms&#8221; Exploring Oppression and Intersectionality<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/waethnicstudies.com\/modules-2-9-registration\/\">What Does Liberatory Education Look Like?<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/waethnicstudies.com\/modules-2-9-registration\/\">Ontological Distance; The Educator\u2019s Answer to Opportunity Gaps<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/waethnicstudies.com\/modules-2-9-registration\/\">Critical Race Theory; Levels of Oppression<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/waethnicstudies.com\/modules-2-9-registration\/\">Culturally Sustaining (and Disruptive) Pedagogies<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/waethnicstudies.com\/modules-2-9-registration\/\">Ethnic Studies Frameworks and Content<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>The modules include material on &#8220;comparing primary source documents during the European Enlightenment with modern media portrayals of Black people to create a timeline of race and anti-Blackness.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Additionally, &#8220;Before transforming pedagogy, educators must take an inventory of their current practices and pull the weeds that are preventing them from implementing a culturally sustaining praxis.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>&#8220;Ethnic studies scholars&#8221; such as Dr. Duncan-Andrade and Dr. Grisel Acosta are cited in the curriculum as well as &#8220;Dr. Kimberl\u00e9 Crenshaw to remind us intersectionality is about intersecting oppressions, and not everyone has them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>An entire module is devoted to challenging &#8220;the claim that ethnic studies is &#8216;radical&#8217; by comparing the traditional to the revolutionary. We also consider the impact of the white gaze on liberatory education,&#8221; it reads.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<figure class=\"kg-card kg-image-card\"><\/figure>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Castro-Gill also claims in the curriculum that &#8220;Education doesn\u2019t meet the needs of BIPOC students. To fix this, we must turn inward, not outward. The ontological distance is a framework created by Dr. Dominguez. We use it to identify where we are in our praxis, where we want to be, and how to get there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<figure class=\"kg-card kg-image-card\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/295691391_602909978097700_5836171051233423141_n.jpg\" class=\"kg-image\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/waethnicstudies.com\/modules-2-9-registration\/\">Module 7: Critical Race Theory; Levels of Oppression<\/a>, &#8220;Using systems theory, we map Dr. Jones\u2019 Levels of Oppression framework and identify our role in systemic racial oppression. Understanding how the three levels of oppression function in a systems model shows us exactly where to disrupt systemic racial oppression.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<figure class=\"kg-card kg-image-card\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/296920789_604287881293243_6509019356275809593_n.jpg\" class=\"kg-image\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Washington state Republican Rep. Jim Walsh specifically called out this module on Twitter Tuesday saying sarcastically, &#8220;Don&#8217;t worry. Critical Race Theory isn&#8217;t taught in WA public schools.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<figure class=\"kg-card kg-embed-card\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Don&#8217;t worry. Critical Race Theory isn&#8217;t taught in WA public schools. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qhP0vWje4o\">pic.twitter.com\/qhP0vWje4o<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jim Walsh (@JimWalshLD19) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JimWalshLD19\/status\/1562466376895193088?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 24, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>This is followed by a module devoted to &#8220;Following the lead of Dr. Ladson-Billings and Dr. San Pedro, we interrogate contemporary applications of culturally responsive teaching and examine our own praxis for what Dr. Ladson-Billings calls the \u2018Three Corruptions of CRP.\u2019 We then examine our praxis to understand how we intentionally disrupt and confront whiteness.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>WESN states on their website that their vision is to have their version of &#8220;Ethnic Studies in every classroom of WA State taught by anti-racist educators committed to centering the history and lived experiences of people of Color,&#8221; for grades K-12.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>They plan to enact this by:<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<ul>\n<li>Centering the voices of people of Color with a focus on youth and critical educators of Color<\/li>\n<li>Continually learning, teaching, and developing strategies to implement K-12 Ethnic Studies programs in all Washington State public school districts and independent schools<\/li>\n<li>Providing anti-racist and Ethnic Studies professional development for K-12 educators and students<\/li>\n<li>Cultivating connections with community organizations with shared anti-racist education missions<\/li>\n<li>Building systemic power by advocating with educator associations, educational service districts, and state-level education committees and organizations<\/li>\n<li>Creating a community of activists to learn from and with each other<\/li>\n<li>Protecting the integrity of Ethnic Studies by eradicating whitewashed, Eurocentric pedagogies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<figure class=\"kg-card kg-image-card\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Picture2-2.png\" class=\"kg-image\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>The organization also proudly displays its list of &#8220;demands that we will push at a State level through all channels, including the State Legislature, OSPI, and WEA (Washington Education Association teachers\u2019 union).&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<figure class=\"kg-card kg-image-card\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Picture3-1.png\" class=\"kg-image\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>The group appears to be following through on their first demand of &#8220;Annual Racial Equity Literacy Training for all K-12 teachers and in all pre-service teacher preparation programs.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<figure class=\"kg-card kg-image-card\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Picture4-1.png\" class=\"kg-image\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>According to their justification for the demand WESN states,<strong> &#8220;<\/strong>White parents don\u2019t often recognize or don\u2019t seem to care that their child is being socialized to be racist, because we live in a racist society.
