We thought that there was a lot of Russian propaganda in the 2016 election. We have it on notice that basically, there\u2019s about to be some kind of dump that\u2019s similar to that,\u201d said Zuckerberg. \u201cSo, just be vigilant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a result, when the New York Post released its story on Hunter Biden\u2019s laptop, Facebook intentionally suppressed distribution of the story.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDistribution on Facebook was decreased, but people were still allowed to share it,\u201d Zuckerberg said. \u201cSo, you can still share it. You can still consume it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zuckerberg explained the end result was \u201cfewer people\u201d seeing the article \u201cthan would have otherwise.\u201d He says the FBI\u2019s approach to Facebook spurred the company to action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just kind of thought, Hey look, if the FBI, which, you know, I still view as a legitimate institution in this country, it\u2019s a very professional law enforcement,\u201d Zuckerberg told Rogan. \u201cThey come to us and tell us that we need to be on guard about something. Then I want to take that seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Zuckerberg admitted the FBI did not specifically tell Facebook the Hunter Biden laptop story was the \u201cRussian propaganda\u201d it was referring to, but he said the story \u201cbasically fit the pattern.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Zuckerberg went to say he regretted Facebook\u2019s involvement when the story was proven to be factually accurate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen something like [the Hunter Biden laptop story] turns out to be real, is there regret for not having it evenly distributed,\u201d Rogan asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt sucks,\u201d Zuckerberg responded.<\/p>\n<p>Zuckerberg compared the situation to that of an innocent man going through a trial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it probably sucks though in the same way that probably having to go through like a criminal trial, but being proven innocent in the end, sucks,\u201d Zuckerberg explained. \u201cLike it still sucks that you had to go through a criminal trial, but at the end, you\u2019re free. So I don\u2019t know what the answer would have been. Don\u2019t do anything, or don\u2019t have any process? I think the process was pretty reasonable. We still let people share it.
