Roger Marshall (R-Kan.) on Aug. 23 sent a letter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022-08-23-Senator-Marshall-Fauci-Records-Preservation-Letter-to-HHS.pdf\">(pdf)<\/a> to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra, demanding that he take immediate steps to preserve all records and information related to Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Francis Collins.<\/p>\n<p>The request came a day after Fauci\u2019s announcement that he would step down from his leadership position at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).<\/p>\n<p>Collins is NIH Director, while Fauci is the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).<\/p>\n<p>Marshall sought \u201call documents, records, memoranda, research, correspondence, or other communication or any portion thereof relevant to any involvement of Dr. Fauci or Dr. Collins,\u201d according to the letter.<\/p>\n<p>Marshall also called on the agency to ensure that its staff would collect, retain, and preserve all related documents, communications, and other records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI ask that you immediately confirm that HHS is preserving these records by providing all orders, notices, and guidance given to all HHS staff regarding preservation of information related to these matters and individuals,\u201d the senator stated in the letter. He asked the health agency to warn its staff against concealing or destroying the requested records, noting that this could result in a fine and imprisonment for up to three years.<\/p>\n<p> Concerns About NIH Record-Keeping <\/p>\n<p>Marshall attached to the letter a list of concerns about the NIH\u2019s record-keeping practices.<\/p>\n<p>The list referred to a letter (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/files\/records-mgmt\/resources\/ud-2022-0027-hhs-nih-open-letter.pdf\">pdf<\/a>) from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), requesting the NIH investigate the alleged\u00a0unauthorized destruction of records concerning its involvement with the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV), as well as documents related to grant-making decisions involving EcoHealth Alliance, a U.S.-based health organization.<\/p>\n<p>The NARA request followed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thenationalpulse.com\/2022\/02\/16\/nih-refuses-to-comply-with-congressional-doc-request\/\">an article by The National Pulse<\/a> that alleged the NIH had repeatedly failed to comply with congressional requests for documents related<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sen.
