Not only are migrants breaking American laws, they are being rewarded with extensive taxpayer support for hotels and lodging when they arrive. Democrats say that isn\u2019t enough.<\/p>\n<p>A new House bill seeks to use $50 million from taxpayers to supplement living expenses for illegal migrants being bused to D.C. by Republican officials, whose states are overwhelmed amid surging border crossings under the Biden administration. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/house-bill\/8725\/actions?r=1&amp;s=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emergency appropriations bill<\/a> introduced last week by D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton would pump more money into FEMA\u2019s Emergency Food and Shelter Program for assisting illegal immigrants, adding on to the $150 million already dedicated to supporting this effort at the expense of the American taxpayer. <a href=\"https:\/\/dcist.com\/story\/22\/08\/23\/norton-aid-bill-migrants-texas-arizona-dc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reports<\/a> show at least $65 million of this has already been spent.<\/p>\n<p>Norton pointed to the relocation of illegal migrants from southern states to D.C. as reason for this assistance.\u00a0A <a href=\"https:\/\/gov.texas.gov\/news\/post\/operation-lone-star-provides-vital-relief-to-overrun-border-communities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press release<\/a> from the office of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott last week stated that Texas has bused more than 7,000 illegal immigrants to D.C. since April. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2022\/may\/12\/arizona-busing-migrants-dc-follows-texas-lead-send\/\">Arizona<\/a> has followed the direction of the Lone Star State,\u00a0busing those who cross into their state illegally up to the District too.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/norton.house.gov\/media-center\/press-releases\/norton-introduces-emergency-appropriations-bill-to-provide-humanitarian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a>, Norton claimed these governors \u201care exploiting and harming desperate and vulnerable people fleeing dangerous situations in their home countries for political gain\u201d and insisted \u201cmore funding is needed to assist these families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Activists who believe these illegal immigrants aren\u2019t receiving enough aid complain they are \u201conly\u201d given \u201ca hotel room and three meals a day.\u201d \u201cWhile migrants have expressed gratitude for shelter,\u201d DCist <a href=\"https:\/\/dcist.com\/story\/22\/08\/23\/migrant-families-hampton-inn-treatment\/\">reported<\/a>, \u201ctheir advocates say they\u2019re not receiving the care or resources typically offered to unhoused residents in the city,\u201d such as case managers and counseling.  <\/p>\n<p>Illegal migrants have also reported \u201cnegative experiences\u201d at locations where they are sheltered, including the NoMa Hampton Inn. They claim to face \u201cstringent restrictions\u201d due to part of the hotel being utilized as a quarantine shelter for homeless residents of the District and have reported \u201cdiscriminatory treatment from hotel security that has resulted in at least one police complaint.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Up to 15 percent of these illegal migrants choose to reside in the District indefinitely, \u201cparticularly because they cannot legally work due to their immigration status.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>In addition to efforts to make taxpayers further fund these expenses, D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine <a href=\"https:\/\/dcist.com\/story\/22\/08\/11\/dc-attorney-general-grants-migrants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a> earlier this month that his office will offer up to $50,000 in grants to volunteer organizations supporting the needs of the illegal migrants.<\/p>\n<p>As The Federalist has <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/videos\/cartel-country-the-untold-story-of-americas-black-market-on-the-border-full-documentary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">documented extensively<\/a>, Democrats\u2019 border policies incentivize migrants to take deadly journeys through Central America and Mexico, padding the pockets of cartels and, ultimately, draining funds from American taxpayers. Norton\u2019s bill would only increase those dangerous incentives, forcing Americans to pay more as more people break the country\u2019s laws.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Sophia is an intern at The Federalist and a student at Le Moyne College.
