Gov. John Fetterman. In May, Fetterman suffered a stroke from which he, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/06\/03\/fetterman-heart-condition-almost-died-pennsylvania\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">his words,<\/a> \u201calmost died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf John Fetterman had ever eaten a vegetable in his life, then maybe he wouldn\u2019t have had a major stroke and wouldn\u2019t be in the position of having to lie about it constantly,\u201d said Oz spokeswoman Rachel Tripp in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/oz-on-fetterman-if-hed-eaten-vegetable-wouldnt-have-stroke-2022-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a> to Business Insider. <\/p>\n<p>The comment came in response to a back-and-forth between the two Senate candidates after Oz published a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrOz\/status\/1511822274998984709?s=20&amp;t=CQ0rzJTQMmWKGo1WsDMj6w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">campaign video<\/a> complaining about inflation by shopping for \u201ccrudit\u00e9.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn PA, we call this a veggie tray,\u201d Fetterman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PcMvJg7mpOU\">quipped<\/a> in a follow-up clip.<\/p>\n<p>After the Oz campaign told Fetterman to try a tray, Fetterman fired back in a viral tweet. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a stroke. I survived it. I\u2019m truly grateful to still be here today,\u201d Fetterman <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JohnFetterman\/status\/1562235945998553089\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">responded<\/a>. \u201cI know politics can be nasty, but even then, I could *never* imagine ridiculing someone for their health challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JohnFetterman\/status\/1562235945998553089?s=20&amp;t=ziIvDD0BphaNkUi_hTGShg\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Fetterman\u2019s Tuesday post racked up more than 30,000 retweets and nearly a quarter-million \u201clikes.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Oz\u2019s opponents piled on, from the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ProjectLincoln\/status\/1562166909923196928?s=20&amp;t=ziIvDD0BphaNkUi_hTGShg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lincoln Project<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OccupyDemocrats\/status\/1562175511425560576?s=20&amp;t=ziIvDD0BphaNkUi_hTGShg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Occupy Democrats<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jaketapper\/status\/1562427390915407875?s=20&amp;t=ziIvDD0BphaNkUi_hTGShg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CNN<\/a>\u2018s Jake Tapper and The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sarahellison\/status\/1562192152884523009?s=20&amp;t=ziIvDD0BphaNkUi_hTGShg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Washington Post<\/a>\u2018s Sarah Ellison.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou say this kind of thing when you\u2019re not just losing but facing humiliating overwhelming defeat,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/joshtpm\/status\/1562172527358709762?s=20&amp;t=ziIvDD0BphaNkUi_hTGShg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> Talking Points Memo Founder Josh Marshall on the Oz campaign comments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[A]h, \u2018eat your vegetables,\u2019 a notoriously winning campaign slogan in American politics,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WaltHickey\/status\/1562181363838734337?s=20&amp;t=ziIvDD0BphaNkUi_hTGShg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> Insider\u2019s Walter Hickey. <\/p>\n<p>Maybe it hasn\u2019t been in the past, but maybe now it should be. <\/p>\n<p>First of all, thank God Fetterman is alive. Anyone who wishes death upon their political opponents should reevaluate his own life. <\/p>\n<p>But second, it\u2019s way past time our leaders took more pride in personal health and prioritized clean eating habits, especially as the country continues to ignore the grim lessons from the coronavirus pandemic and adds weight to an already supersized population. Maybe if our politicians placed more value on personal health as a personal responsibility serving as the bedrock of public health to begin with, leaders wouldn\u2019t have impulsively shut down gyms and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/01\/27\/new-jersey-gym-owner-sentenced-to-one-year-probation-for-saving-lives-during-pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">livelihoods<\/a> over a virus that disproportionately kills the obese. <\/p>\n<p>By March 2021 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/03\/08\/covid-cdc-study-finds-roughly-78percent-of-people-hospitalized-were-overweight-or-obese.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">80 percent<\/a> of those hospitalized with the novel coronavirus were either overweight or obese. Yet the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/obesity\/data\/adult.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">data<\/a> from the CDC which leads up to March 2020 shows 42 percent of Americans are categorically obese. As many as <a href=\"https:\/\/nccd.cdc.gov\/dnpao_dtm\/rdPage.aspx?rdReport=DNPAO_DTM.ExploreByTopic&amp;islClass=OWS&amp;islTopic=&amp;go=GO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">77<\/a> percent of U.S. adults are considered, at minimum, overweight. In other words, if you are at a metabolically healthy weight, you are the minority in America. <\/p>\n<p>If nothing else was clear in the aftermath of the pandemic\u2019s worst days, it was that living with Covid as a nation <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/12\/03\/living-with-the-virus-requires-confronting-obesity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">requires<\/a> confronting obesity. A true health care system is one that is proactive and places a higher emphasis on lifestyles preventing severe outcomes from disease in the first place, as opposed to the incumbent sick care system present in the United States. <\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/07\/09\/studies-show-americans-were-in-even-worse-health-than-we-thought-going-into-covid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">series of studies<\/a> out this summer revealed the U.S. was in even worse shape headed into the Covid pandemic than previously thought, with just 1 in 5 residents living with \u201coptimal heart health\u201d and only 1 in 7 living with \u201cgood cardiometabolic health.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Heart health and weight control can be radically altered by regular exercise and clean eating. Fetterman admitted to having ignored his own heart condition leading up to an almost fatal stroke.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFetterman\u2019s campaign also released a letter from his doctor stating that the candidate has a condition called cardiomyopathy, a disease that makes it harder for the heart to deliver blood to the body, but that he will be \u2018fine\u2019 if he continues to take his medications, get enough exercise and improve his diet,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/06\/03\/fetterman-heart-condition-almost-died-pennsylvania\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> The Washington Post. <\/p>\n<p>So when Oz\u2019s campaign lectured Fetterman to eat his vegetables, where was the lie? The fact that sound health advice for someone who almost died just months ago was met with such vitriol means Americans haven\u2019t learned much of anything from the pandemic over the last three years. <\/p>\n<p>Moreover, is Fetterman actually healthy? His <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/pa-2022-elections-fetterman-pittsburgh-speech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first<\/a> public speech since his May stroke raises doubt:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><\/figure>\n<p>The comments from the Oz campaign may have been snarky, but candidates\u2019 health is also fair game when voters are making decisions about who they want to represent them for years in high office. <\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Tristan Justice is the western correspondent for The Federalist.
