A <a href=\"https:\/\/edex.s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/publication\/pdfs\/20131023-Common-Core-in-the-Schools-a-First-Look-at-Reading-Assignments.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2013 study<\/a> conducted by The Fordham Institute found it was the most common book taught by ninth and tenth-grade teachers in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>A post shared on Facebook claims the state of Florida banned it in schools. \u201cFlorida bans the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel \u2018To Kill a Mockingbird\u2019 from its schools,\u201d reads the post. \u201cJust a generation ago, it was on Florida schools required reading list and triggered many children\u2019s interest in the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is no evidence to suggest the book has been banned from Florida schools. Check Your Fact found no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=florida+bans+to+kill+a+mockingbird&amp;source=lnms&amp;tbm=nws&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjc47OUk9v5AhV6LEQIHYKgCdIQ_AUoAXoECAIQAw&amp;biw=1440&amp;bih=821&amp;dpr=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">credible news reporting<\/a> about such a development. Pen America, a <a href=\"https:\/\/pen.org\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">non-profit<\/a> that works to \u201cprotect free expression in the United States and worldwide,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1hTs_PB7KuTMBtNMESFEGuK-0abzhNxVv4tgpI5-iKe8\/edit?urp=gmail_link#gid=1380530296\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">maintains<\/a> a database of banned books from school districts across the U.S While Florida school districts have banned several books, \u201cTo Kill A Mockingbird\u201d is not listed among those books.<\/p>\n<p>Pen America\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1hTs_PB7KuTMBtNMESFEGuK-0abzhNxVv4tgpI5-iKe8\/edit?urp=gmail_link#gid=1380530296\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">database<\/a> does show that \u201cTo Kick A Mockingbird\u201d has been banned in school districts in North Carolina and Oklahoma. A Seattle school also dropped the book from its reading list in January, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/utah\/2022\/1\/28\/22906501\/seattle-school-bans-to-kill-a-mockingbird-over-racism-concerns-as-wave-of-book-challenges-continues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Desert News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bryan Griffin, Republican Flordia Gov. DeSantis\u2019s press secretary, pointed Check Your Fact to a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BryanDGriffin\/status\/1561484070529499136?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tweet<\/a> of his where he referred to the viral claim as \u201cfalse.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2022\/08\/11\/fact-check-monkeypox-spreading-pfizer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Is Monkeypox Only Spreading In Countries Where The Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine Has Been Distributed?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">False.
