The NYT Guild said it couldn\u2019t determine whether the racial disparities were caused by a problematic review system or by barriers to success for racial minorities at the NYT.<\/p>\n<p>Hispanic workers had a 61% lower chance of getting a high performance score; black workers had a 47% lower chance and Asian workers had a 34% lower chance, the report found. It\u2019s plain negligence,\u201d NYT investigator Haley Willis <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/heytherehaley\/status\/1562081215540256769\"><span class=\"s2\">wrote<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cMy colleagues have applied the stellar reporting rigor used to cover powerful institutions to discover persistent racial disparities in our own employer,\u201d NYT writer Shira Ovide <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ShiraOvide\/status\/1562093375045738497\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019m in awe of my colleagues and not of my employer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">NYT reporter Jenny Vrentas <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JennyVrentas\/status\/1562080967593959425\"><span class=\"s2\">praised<\/span><\/a> the report for \u201c[holding] those in power to account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The outlet has disputed previous reports of racial disparities in employee evaluations and called the researchers\u2019 methods into question, so the NYT Guild performed tests using the method suggested by NYT management, the report explained. The test didn\u2019t find racial disparities in the NYT evaluation results, but it also failed to find racial disparity even in fake results which were intentionally biased, the union <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyguild.org\/2022-nyt-performance-evaluations-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">claimed<\/a>; by breaking down data into departments it made the groups too small to find statistical significance, the NYT Guild argued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn one particularly egregious case, Black employees were\u00a0<span class=\"c21 bold svelte-1yjror3\">20 times as likely\u00a0<\/span>to get the bottom rating, and yet the company\u2019s methodology failed to find statistically significant bias,\u201d the NewsGuild wrote in its report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The NYT and NewsGuild did not respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
