And there\u2019s going to be people that want to hurt people,\u2019\u201d Epps Jr. quoted his father saying. \u201c\u2018If there\u2019s people that want to hurt people, there\u2019s going to be people that get hurt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018If there\u2019s something that happens, you guys need to know that you need to help each other,\u2019 and he grabs the gauze and he\u2019s, you know, he\u2019s a military man and he pulled out the tourniquets and says, \u2018I want to show you guys how to use this if something happens, you got to help other people.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Epps Jr. recounted that conversation in a 40-minute FBI interview on April 13, 2021, according to an audio recording of the meeting obtained by The Epoch Times.<\/p>\n<p>The recording is part of a collection of Epps-related material obtained by the newspaper, including FBI interview summaries, FBI audio recordings, transcripts, videos, and photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Epps Sr., 61, has been at the center of a storm of controversy and speculation since June 2021, when Revolver News profiled him as a provocateur who encouraged people to go into the Capitol.<\/p>\n<p>He was never arrested or charged.<\/p>\n<p>His photo was originally No. 16 on the FBI Jan. 6 most-wanted page but was later scrubbed from the site without explanation.<\/p>\n<p>Records obtained by The Epoch Times showed Epps Sr. believed there would be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/ray-epps-told-fbi-he-expected-a-bomb-attack-near-the-capitol-on-january-6-documents-show_4655405.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bomb attack<\/a> on a side street of Washington on Jan. 6, which prompted him to bring a first-aid kit when he traveled to the city from Arizona.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4667313\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/08\/16\/Epps_Clears_Crowd_Jan6-1200x668.jpg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4667313 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/08\/16\/Epps_Clears_Crowd_Jan6-1200x668.jpg\" alt=\"Epoch Times Photo\" width=\"640\" height=\"356\" \/><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a> Ray Epps Sr. moves protesters back from the police line at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. (Metropolitan Police Department\/Screenshot via The Epoch Times)<\/figure>\n<p>Epps Sr. told FBI agents in March 2021 that he only came to Washington on Jan. 6 because he wanted to look after his son, who decided to make the trip from his home in Utah with a friend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s my blood. I didn\u2019t want anything to happen to him,\u201d Epps Sr. told the FBI on March 3, 2021, according to an audio recording of the interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo my wife and I decided that I should probably go, so at the last minute we bought a ticket and I went.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Epps Jr. said before they left their hotel in the early morning of Jan. 6, his father got out his first-aid kit and told them they should be prepared to lend assistance that day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s setting us up to [help] if there\u2019s a bomb or something, you know? That\u2019s normally where it would happen, right? In those big groups of people?\u201d Epps Jr. said. \u201c\u2018And that at that point, the police and military aren\u2019t going to be able to help each other, help you out very quickly. So you got to start helping other people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo it wasn\u2019t like, other people may think he tried to set something up, right? But he\u2019s just there to help,\u201d Epps Jr. said. \u201cAnd he tried to teach us how to help others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reached by The Epoch Times on Aug. 19 for comment about his FBI interview, Epps Jr. said: \u201cI\u2019ve answered all the questions that were asked of me, so I\u2019m good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Epps Sr. told FBI agents in Phoenix that in the weeks leading up to Jan. 6, he \u201cstarted getting a bad feeling\u201d that calamity could strike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was afraid they were going to set off an explosion on one of the side streets,\u201d he said, according to a recording of the interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we tried to stay in the middle, tried to get there early, tried to stay away from the sides. And if something like that happened, I had a first-aid kit. I could help out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>FBI agents did not press Epps Sr. or his son for more details on the bomb fears.<\/p>\n<p>Nor did they ask about the two alleged pipe bombs found outside the Republican and Democrat party headquarters, each just blocks from the Capitol.<\/p>\n<p>The RNC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/contact-us\/field-offices\/washingtondc\/news\/press-releases\/fbi-washington-field-office-releases-video-and-additional-information-regarding-the-pipe-bomb-investigation-090821\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pipe bomb<\/a> was placed near the corner of the Capitol Hill Club facing a side street. The devices did not detonate and the FBI has not arrested anyone in those cases.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018My Memory is Not that Good\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Epps Jr.\u2019s story differed in some areas from what his father told the FBI six weeks earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The son said he and a friend arrived in Washington first, arriving on Jan. 4, because he had a weeklong hotel deal. He initially \u201chung out until my Dad got there. I think he got there the next day or something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Epps Sr. told agents he arrived before his son on Jan. 4.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, yeah, he got there later. So I rented a car. And I went out to get something to eat. Couldn\u2019t find anything to eat. D.C.\u2019s a place. So I turn around, come back, pick them up. And then we went to the hotel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The younger Epps told agents \u201cmy memory is not that good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I don\u2019t want anything used against me if you find something out,\u201d Epps Jr. said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we had the hotel room because it came with our package. And we just, we asked the hotel to take him into, in the same room, because there was no hotels \u2026 because he was last minute, kind of made that decision to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the night of Jan. 5, Epps Jr. said he called his father at the hotel because some fights had broken out in the crowds gathered at Black Lives Matter Plaza in downtown Washington.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo he was there to kind of calm it down. I kind of stayed in the back because I am young [and] have five little kids. So I just observed,\u201d Epps Jr. said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe doesn\u2019t have as many responsibilities. So he gets up in there and tries to quiet people down and teach him what we\u2019re there for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Videos from the night of Jan. 5 show Epps Sr. engaging in discussions with Trump supporters and urging them to go into the Capitol the next day.<\/p>\n<p>Epps Sr. shouted to the crowd: \u201cTomorrow, we need to go into the Capitol. Into the Capitol. Peacefully,\u201d he said. The crowd then started chanting, \u201cFed! Fed! Fed! Fed!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He got into an animated discussion with Tim Gionet, known on social media as \u201cBaked Alaska.\u201d Gionet was charged by federal prosecutors for being in the Capitol on Jan. 6. He pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count on July 22 and will be sentenced on Jan. 12, 2023.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not what it\u2019s about,\u201d Epps Sr. said. \u201cIt\u2019s about the Constitution. We\u2019re here to defend the Constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He told Gionet, \u201cYou\u2019re losing focus \u2026 because you\u2019re fighting with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Epps Sr. told the FBI that Gionet was a major instigator in the crowd on Jan. 5.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo they go out and try to instigate this stuff. And they try to bring other people in on it, trying to get them going,\u201d Epps Sr. said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then they film it. They cut them out. And they get famous because they, you know, he\u2019s a bum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Epps Sr. said Gionet \u201cwas one of the main ones that was trying to instigate with the police, trying to get it going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gionet \u201cwas right in their face. And I kept trying to tell him, \u2018Hey, that\u2019s not what it\u2019s about.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Epoch Times contacted Gionet\u2019s attorney for a reaction to Epps Sr.\u2019s comments but did not receive a reply by press time.<\/p>\n<p>In one video, Epps Sr. told podcaster Villain Report that people need to learn their family history and the sacrifices forebears made for freedom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy ancestors came here in the 1600s. Francis and Louise Epps,\u201d he said. \u201cThe Appomattox Manor was founded then. That\u2019s where the peace treaty was signed for the Civil War. That stayed in my family until 1979.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis country means something to me. It means something to everybody here. If everybody does their history, they\u2019ll find those kinds of people in their history,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe owe it to them to stay free. We owe it to their sacrifices, all the things they did for us to be free. That\u2019s what it\u2019s about.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Bat and a Hammer<\/h2>\n<p>Epps Jr. and his friend got separated from his father at the Ellipse during Trump\u2019s speech. He said he noticed some odd things among members of the crowd around the Ellipse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019d be people walking around, just every once awhile, you get a glimpse of a hammer, or a bat and a backpack. And it\u2019s like, what is going on?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike there\u2019s men, women and children here. We\u2019re not here for that. The men first approached the east side, but found no protesters and a long temporary police barricade.<\/p>\n<p>Epps Jr. said they noticed a group of \u201cfully dressed civilians\u201d wearing \u201ccombat gear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd they had little orange flags on little markers so they probably tell each other apart,\u201d Epps Jr. said. \u201cI remember looking over, I\u2019m like, \u2018Hey, that does not look like they\u2019re part of our group.\u2019 Or they kind of look odd, you know. I don\u2019t know what they\u2019re up to, probably nothing good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When they walked over to the west side, Epps Jr. said, there were 3,000 to 4,000 people already there.<\/p>\n<p>He said he helped some older people climb over a half-height stone wall, but was concerned that the large crowd was penned in between the wall and the police line far ahead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe noticed that there was a line of people in the front that weren\u2019t there to be gentle at all. And they\u2019re kind of fighting with the police. Holy cow, what did we walk into?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Epps Jr. said he saw his father up at the police line, facing the crowd and trying to keep protesters from lashing out at police.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what he\u2019s doing,\u201d Epps Jr. said. \u201cHe\u2019s walking up and down, trying to get people to calm down like, \u2018Hey, you\u2019ve gone far enough. This is what you came here for. Don\u2019t. These police officers are on our side.\u2019 You know, just I can hear him.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018This Isn\u2019t Going to Look Good\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>From a distance, though, the optics might present the wrong impression, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI sat there and I thought: \u201cMan, Dad, this isn\u2019t gonna look good if somebody takes a picture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Epps Jr. said the front row of agitators was pulling the bike-rack barricades from police and then throwing them back into the crowd.<\/p>\n<p>When rubber bullets began to fly and tear gas made its way back where he was, Epps Jr. said he decided it was time to leave.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt like I was dying there for a moment,\u201d he said, \u201cand so I just helped as long as I could and I thought, \u2018I gotta get out of here. I can\u2019t keep doing this.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said he saw his father was lending aid to a man who collapsed from a seizure. Epps Sr. eventually helped carry the man off the Capitol property so he could get medical help.<\/p>\n<p>Epps Sr. said he was heading away from the Capitol due to the tear gas when he heard a call in the crowd for a medic. It was very rapid, but he hadn\u2019t, he didn\u2019t breathe for almost two minutes,\u201d Epps Sr. told the FBI. \u201cSo we were getting ready to do CPR. And they found out he was a diabetic. And I don\u2019t know but I think maybe he went down because of the gas, the CS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I don\u2019t know if his body wouldn\u2019t let him breathe. But he was out and \u2026 he was being trampled at one point. So we got him up and we started taking him out and telling people, \u2018Hey, gang way, we\u2019re trying to get through.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n<p>Video evidence from the west side backs up stories the men told about Epps Sr. trying to de-escalate problems when protesters became instigators at the police line. Several times he confronted agitators and told them to back off or step back from the police line.<\/p>\n<p>A Metropolitan Police Department bodycam captured Epps Sr. chiding one man who was shouting at police. \u201cThey\u2019re not the enemy,\u201d he said. About a minute later, he physically restrained a young man and told him, \u201cNobody needs to get hurt. Back off, man, just stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At about 1:45 p.m., Epps Sr. asked police, \u201cIf I can get them off the steps, we can stay here?\u201d He started moving people back, including a man taunting police: \u201cAre you ready to die for this [expletive]?\u201d and \u201cAre you ready to kill?\u201d the man shouted.<\/p>\n<p>Other actions caught on video continue to generate questions, however. At one point the crowd started passing a giant fabric billboard in a metal frame. The billboard was eventually rammed into the police line. (Christopher Chern via Storyful)<\/figure>\n<p>Clark also said he saw Epps Sr. pull a man out of the crowd and the man and two associates went up along a wall near a staircase and pulled the lid off a utility hatch.<\/p>\n<p>The men removed a long 2-by-4 piece of lumber, a long, heavy-duty cardboard tube, and a small ladder.<\/p>\n<p>The 2-by-4 and the cardboard tube were later passed through the crowd outside the Lower West Terrace tunnel.<\/p>\n<p>The tube was used as a battering ram to smash a window adjacent to the tunnel, video shows.<\/p>\n<p>Through his attorney, Epps Sr. denied Clark\u2019s story.<\/p>\n<p>Epps Jr. asked the FBI agents what could be done to offset the damage to his father\u2019s reputation by being placed on the FBI\u2019s Jan. 6 most-wanted page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what I\u2019d say is, I\u2019m sympathetic to what you\u2019re saying here with your father, if his name was thrown out there and people were saying all kinds of things and it\u2019s unfortunate,\u201d one of the agents said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I think this may be the differentiator on why your approach may have been a better approach that day.
