New York leads among states with 2,910 cases, followed by California with 2,663 cases.<\/p>\n<p>Globally, more than 42,000 cases have been reported, with the U.S. having the most cases, followed by Spain at 6,119 cases. No other nation has currently reported more than 3,500 cases.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Human and Health Services (DHS) <a href=\"https:\/\/aspr.hhs.gov\/legal\/PHE\/Pages\/monkeypox-4Aug22.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">declared<\/a> monkeypox a public health emergency on August 4.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn light of evolving circumstances on the ground, I am declaring a public health emergency on #monkeypox,\u201d DHS Secretary Xavier Becerra wrote. \u201cWe are prepared to take our response to the next level in addressing this virus. We urge every American to take monkeypox seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In light of evolving circumstances on the ground, I am declaring a public health emergency on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/monkeypox?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#monkeypox<\/a>. We are prepared to take our response to the next level in addressing this virus. We urge every American to take monkeypox seriously.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Secretary Xavier Becerra (@SecBecerra) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SecBecerra\/status\/1555273167320584193?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 4, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, the White House released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/08\/18\/fact-sheet-white-house-announces-new-actions-to-combat-monkeypox-outbreak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fact sheet<\/a> to announce new actions to combat the monkeypox outbreak. The actions include making 1.8 million vaccine doses available.<\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/08\/02\/president-biden-announces-team-to-lead-monkeypox-response\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> new leadership to oversee the nation\u2019s monkeypox response earlier this month. The president\u00a0named FEMA\u2019s Robert Fenton as the White House national monkeypox response coordinator and Dr. Demetre Daskalakis as the White House national monkeypox response deputy coordinator.<\/p>\n<p>The first case of monkeypox was confirmed in the U.S. on May 18, according to the announcement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the coming weeks, under the leadership of Fenton and Daskalakis, the Administration will advance and accelerate the United States\u2019 monkeypox response to mitigate the spread of the virus, protect individuals most at risk of contracting the virus, and care for those who have been afflicted with it,\u201d the White House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/08\/02\/president-biden-announces-team-to-lead-monkeypox-response\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> read.<\/p>\n<p>According to the CDC, monkeypox can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/transmission.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spread<\/a> to anyone through direct contact with monkeypox rash, scabs, or body fluids from a person with monkeypox, touching objects, fabrics, and surfaces that have been used by someone with monkeypox, or contact with respiratory secretions. \u201cThis direct contact can happen during intimate contact,\u201d the CDC adds.<\/p>\n<p>The illness generally lasts two to four weeks and is rarely fatal, according to the CDC\u2019s description.
