href=\"https:\/\/www.based-politics.com\/2022\/08\/19\/facebook-says-posts-without-government-talking-points-are-missing-context\/\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span class=\"s1\">criticized<\/span><\/a> Facebook\u2019s \u201cfact checkers\u201d for labeling her posts about the IRS hiring thousands of new agents and targeting the middle class as \u201cmissing context.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5183\" Apparently, she didn\u2019t note that the government is promising us they won\u2019t do any of this. The authority the online speech cops appear to cite is the actually the U.S. federal government itself (lol). Not an entity exactly known to be a beacon of truth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The same thing happened to me (again) when I dared to share a post on this subject on Instagram from Rep. But Facebook calls it misinformation apparently because it falls outside the government\u2019s narrative.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>WTF<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">This is mind-blowing in a country like the United States, where encouraging free speech, dissent, and challenging the government has been so crucial in shaping our still relatively young republic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">One must wonder, what if there had been social media throughout our history? What if there had always been \u201cfact-checkers\u201d like the ones we endure today?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Here\u2019s how some of the <b>most important events and debates in American history MIGHT <\/b>(<i><<< note this word, Facebook police) <\/i><b>have been handled by today\u2019s so-called fact-checkers.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>The Vietnam War<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">He was a loving dad.<br \/>He also lied to Americans\u2014for years\u2014about the disastrous war he was getting them into in Vietnam.<br \/>How would Craig McNamara made peace with his father?<br \/>One way, for a while, was walnuts.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/URswrYoVTQ\" class=\"stylish-link\">https:\/\/t.co\/URswrYoVTQ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 David Beard (@dabeard) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dabeard\/status\/1523170816996769792?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" class=\"stylish-link\">May 8, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">Imagine some hippy in 1968 speaking out against the escalating U.S. war in Vietnam on his Facebook, only to have \u201cMissing Context\u201d pop up to warn his followers:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>\u2018End the War! Bring our troops home! Screw Johnson!\u2019<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b><i>Facebook Warning: *Independent fact-checkers* have found that this and similar posts are missing context. The Pentagon and statements by White House officials have suggested that U.S. efforts in this conflict have been productive.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In fact, the war had been going south for many years before the U.S. government would admit it\u2013and it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/06\/09\/us\/pentagon-papers-vietnam-war.html\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span class=\"s1\">a whistleblower that forced them<\/span><\/a> to do it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">While on that subject\u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Edward Snowden reveals illegal mass surveillance by U.S. government<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">On this day in 2013, the first batch of NSA documents leaked by Edward Snowden to Glenn Greenwald was published in the Guardian, revealing that the NSA collects millions of Verizon customers&#8217; phone records daily. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/wx73v2fXim\" class=\"stylish-link\">pic.twitter.com\/wx73v2fXim<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jacobin (@jacobin) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jacobin\/status\/1401146789865132033?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" class=\"stylish-link\">June 5, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">In 2013, when National Security Contractor Edward Snowden blew the whistle on the agency for illegally spying on Americans en masse, the government immediately responded that it wasn\u2019t doing this. They said that no illegal surveillance was taking place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">President Barack Obama promised <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2013\/08\/06\/209692380\/obama-to-leno-there-is-no-spying-on-americans\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span class=\"s1\">time<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/av\/world-us-canada-25785954\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span class=\"s1\">again<\/span><\/a> this wasn\u2019t true. The Director of National Intelligence James Clapper previously testified before Congress that mass collection and surveillance of Americans\u2019 data <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/business-33a88feb083ea35515de3c73e3d854ad\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span class=\"s1\">was not taking place<\/span><\/a> (his lie is what prompted Snowden to come forward.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">So imagine in 2013, oh I don\u2019t know \u2013 ME \u2013 sharing on Facebook:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2018We have to end this mass spying on U.S. citizens. It is unconstitutional and un-American.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b><i>Facebook Warning: *Independent fact-checkers* have found that this and similar posts are missing context. White House officials and the U.S. intelligence community have assured the public that there is no government program collecting the data of everyday Americans.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In 2020, a U.S. federal court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-nsa-spying\/u-s-court-mass-surveillance-program-exposed-by-snowden-was-illegal-idUSKBN25T3CK\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span class=\"s1\">vindicated<\/span><\/a> Snowden.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Social Security as Identification<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Before it was enacted in 1935, one of the arguments against Social Security is that many feared it might one day become a national personal identification.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">So the government made clear on the original cards that it was not to be used for ID:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5216\" src=\"https:\/\/www.based-politics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Screen-Shot-2022-08-21-at-8.28.17-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"331\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.based-politics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Screen-Shot-2022-08-21-at-8.28.17-PM.png 331w, https:\/\/www.based-politics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Screen-Shot-2022-08-21-at-8.28.17-PM-300x161.png 300w, https:\/\/www.based-politics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Screen-Shot-2022-08-21-at-8.28.17-PM-150x81.png 150w\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2012\/9\/26\/3384416\/social-security-numbers-national-ID-identity-theft-nstic\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span class=\"s1\">changed<\/span><\/a> in 1972. Obama Administration officials have assured Americans that they will be able to keep their health plans and their doctors.\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">***<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For skeptics of this column, some of these examples might seem silly and far-fetched. But with Facebook fact-checkers framing Hannah Cox, Congressman Massie and others\u2019 questioning of a pending law in a way that comports with the official government line\u2026 it\u2019s not far-fetched.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It\u2019s happening right now. These few examples of what this might have looked like in the past are off the top of my head.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The COVID-19 pandemic kicked much of this \u201cfact-checking\u201d craze into high gear, and playing devil\u2019s advocate, there are certainly good arguments to be made about wanting the public to make healthy decisions in such turbulent times (though using the Center for Disease Control as the exclusive guide turned out to be extremely problematic. In retrospect, someone needed to fact-check them. Daily.).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But now we can\u2019t even question the IRS?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I am a free speech absolutist. Like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.based-politics.com\/2022\/01\/29\/ira-glasser-on-bill-maher-ex-aclu-head-blasts-orgs-partisan-decline\/\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span class=\"s1\">old school ACLU<\/span><\/a>. I\u2019m an actual liberal on this issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">If Hannah or Rep. Massie said they were aliens sent from Mars by their god Zeus on a mission to prove the world was flat, they should be allowed to say it. We can all also have opinions on it. That\u2019s how free markets work, even the market of ideas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">None of this is an exact science. Discourse is, by its nature, messy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The spread of misinformation has been a societal problem since the beginning of human communication\u2014but much of the spread of disinformation has been done by the government and politicians. Their word should hardly be the measurement by which \u201cfact-checkers\u201d evaluate content. Major communication platforms of our time insisting that the only public discourse allowed must follow government dictums and guidelines is something very new and troubling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">People spreading misinformation can be dangerous. Helping the government silence anyone who challenges it is infinitely more dangerous.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Like this article?
