Just over four-fifths are focusing their business strategy on growth and only 30 percent see recession as a \u201cserious risk,\u201d according to PwC.<\/p>\n<p>The picture of what PwC described as U.S. businesses \u201cwalking a tightrope on talent\u201d comes amid fears of a sharp economic downturn as persistently high inflation pressures the Federal Reserve to hold the course on aggressive monetary policy tightening.<\/p>\n<p>A number of prominent economists have warned of a U.S. recession that could be long and severe, with economist Nouriel Roubini <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/americas-recession-will-be-long-and-severe-those-who-say-itll-be-short-and-shallow-are-delusional-roubini_4667534.html\">recently describing<\/a>\u00a0analysts\u2019 predictions for a short and mild economic downturn as \u201cdelusional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roubini\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-07-25\/shallow-recession-calls-are-totally-delusional-roubini-warns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told Bloomberg<\/a>\u00a0in a recent interview that he expects the United States to be hit by a \u201csevere recession and a severe debt and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-financial-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">financial crisis<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some analysts dismiss the outlook for a long and severe recession, with Bank of America Chief Economist Michael Gapen\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/economy\/bank-america-chief-economist-sees-high-chance-us-recession-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">telling Fox News<\/a>\u00a0in a recent interview that he expects a \u201cmild downturn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recessionary drumbeat got louder last week\u00a0as a key economic gauge from the Conference Board <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/recession-drum-beats-louder-as-leading-economic-index-falls-for-5th-month-straight_4675954.html\">dropped for<\/a> the fifth month in a row, weighed down by a slowing job market, weak manufacturing new orders, and deep consumer pessimism.<\/p>\n<h2>Small-Business Hiring Cools<\/h2>\n<p>America\u2019s small businesses aren\u2019t far behind their bigger peers in terms of slowing down on hiring.<\/p>\n<p>About 45 percent of small-business owners in the United States are implementing hiring freezes because of soaring labor costs and high inflation, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alignable.com\/forum\/52-percent-of-small-biz-employers-say-they-cant-afford-to-hire-staff\">Alignable<\/a>\u00a0July Hiring Report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis represents a significant hiring shift, and is largely a reaction to mounting labor costs, skyrocketing inflation, fears of a recession, and rising interest rates,\u201d Alignable stated.<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting a similar \u201ctalent tightrope\u201d dynamic that was noted by PwC, the Alignable report showed that 51 percent of small-business employers are still trying to find workers to fill key posts.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, the Alignable survey found that just 4 percent of small businesses were planning to reduce staff.<\/p>\n<div class=\"author_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"one_author_block round\">\n<div class=\"top_row\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/author-tom-ozimek\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Follow<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Tom Ozimek has a broad background in journalism, deposit insurance, marketing and communications, and adult education.
