As blown up in the media, the girlfriend Te\u2019o met online did not exist, he was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.urbandictionary.com\/define.php?term=catfished\">catfished<\/a>\u201d by Ronaiah\u00a0Tuiasosopo, a similarly-aged male who now identifies as a transgender woman and goes by Naya.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just wanted to come out here real quick to give a heartfelt thank you to everybody who has come through and has shown so much love to me and my family, for your messages, for your comments,\u201d Te\u2019o <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/sec\/2022\/08\/manti-teo-gives-emotional-thanks-to-fans-in-video-after-netflix-documentary-details-catfishing.html\">said<\/a> in a video posted to Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>The docu-series shows the \u201cuntold\u201d side of the scandal, cast in a far more realistic and sympathetic light than Te\u2019o previously received from the media and public.<\/p>\n<p id=\"7HADOKYJCRFGHFKW7C6XJMN3UE\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">\u201cIt\u2019s been amazing to me to hear the battles that we\u2019re all facing, the challenges that we\u2019re facing in our lives at this time and how the documentary has given some of us hope, the extra push just to keep going, if there\u2019s anything that I wanted from this thing was just to give some of us hope who needed it, to tell those who needed some love that they\u2019re loved, and to help them to forgive,\u201d the openly Christian athlete said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"InContent_Center_7HADOKYJCRFGHFKW7C6XJMN3UE\" class=\"ad-observer\">A few days earlier, Te\u2019o struck the same chord discussing \u201cThe Girlfriend Who Didn\u2019t Exist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I sit here and think about the journey that it has been to come to this point, I am extremely humbled,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI want to publicly thank everyone who has been a part of my journey because you all have played a vital role into me getting to where I am today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo all the people that have supported me and have stood up for me, this one is for you,\u201d the 31-year-old continued. \u201cThank you for your unwavering love and support. You have no idea what that has meant to me the past 10 years. To my family, we\u2019ve been through it all \u2026 the highest of highs and the lowest of lows but I\u2019m forever grateful that I had you all with me, every step of the way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"InContent_Center_Padding\">\u201cLast but not least, God \u2026 thank you,\u201d Te\u2019o added. \u201cThank you for all lessons. Thank you for all the hard times. Thank you for the good people throughout the years that have reached out to show love and support when it was not the most popular thing to do. Thank you for it all. It was all meant for me. \u201c<\/p>\n<p>Notably, the catfisher, Naya, was included in the documentary, at the behest of Te\u2019o.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m grateful that Naya was able to go on there, and I\u2019m sure it wasn\u2019t comfortable for Naya as well, but I wanted it,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/manti-teo-on-why-he-insisted-that-his-catfisher-naya-appear-in-untold-docuseries-exclusive-189361\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told (directors) Tony\u00a0Vainuku and Ryan Duffy I wanted it to be the\u00a0story,\u201d he explained. \u201cThat\u2019s what was so great. Everybody said it\u2019s my story. No, I wanted it to be the story \u2026 When this thing comes out I don\u2019t want it to just be one-sided. I didn\u2019t want it to just be me. I wanted it to be everybody. And again, it was the entire truth and I think that\u2019s what people really love about it.
