Satterberg said in a statement &#8220;The case had never been referred to us, and typically we don&#8217;t ask for an investigation to be conducted. But in recent weeks and months, I heard from people in the community that this matter was important to them and I considered it my responsibility to make this request to the Sheriff before the end of my term.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\"><\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>A Sheriff&#8217;s Office spokesperson told <em>Axios<\/em> that the agency was &#8220;in the early stages of reviewing this matter&#8221; and looks &#8220;forward to sharing periodic updates as appropriate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>The willful destruction or concealment of a public record is <a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/rcw\/default.aspx?cite=40.16.010\">a felony in the state of Washington<\/a>. The text messages are considered public records and are required under state law to be kept. In June, the City of Seattle agreed to pay $200,000 and enact a series of reforms, in order to settle a Public Records Act lawsuit filed by <em>The Seattle Times<\/em> over former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/seattle-news\/politics\/city-settles-seattle-times-lawsuit-over-jenny-durkans-missing-text-messages\/\">Mayor Jenny Durkan\u2019s missing text messages<\/a> from that time period and other public records related issues.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Coordination between the armed occupiers and the city has been <a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/tally-for-costs-of-autonomous-zone-in-seattle-over-one-million-dollars-so-far\">well-documented<\/a> by <em>The Post Millennial.<\/em> The City of Seattle spent over $500,000 dollars in taxpayer funds to secure the autonomous zone for the occupiers.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Previously, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, interim Police chief Adrian Diaz, and Seattle City Attorney Ann Davison <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/seattle\/2022\/05\/31\/seattle-leaders-wont-probe-deleted-texts-from-2020-protests\">each told <\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/seattle\/2022\/05\/31\/seattle-leaders-wont-probe-deleted-texts-from-2020-protests\">Axios<\/a> <\/em>they were not pursuing an investigation. State Attorney General Bob Ferguson&#8217;s office claimed that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/seattle\/2022\/06\/03\/seattle-washington-state-attorneys-fingerpointing-deleted-text-messages\">it was not his responsibility<\/a> to investigate the matter, and stated that the onus would be on local law enforcement.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Durkan has claimed she accidentally dropped her phone into salt water and also denied setting her replacement phone to automatically delete texts.
