Josh Hawley (R-MO) during the first day of confirmation hearings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you believe that illegal entry at America\u2019s borders should remain a crime?\u201d Hawley asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, I haven\u2019t thought about that question,\u201d Garland responded. \u201cI just haven\u2019t thought about that question. I think, you know, the president has made clear that we are a country of, with borders, and with a concern about national security. I don\u2019t know of a proposal to decriminalize, but still make it unlawful to enter. I just don\u2019t know the answer to that question. I haven\u2019t thought about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWill you continue to prosecute on unlawful border crossings?\u201d Hawley asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, this is again, a question of allocation of resources,\u201d Garland responded. \u201cWe will, the department will prevent unlawful crossing. I don\u2019t know. I you know, I have to admit I just don\u2019t know exactly what the conditions are and how this is done.
