They&#8217;re statewide. Candidate quality has a lot to do with the outcome.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>McConnell has repeatedly butted heads with former President Donald Trump, and some took his mention of &#8220;candidate quality&#8221; as a knock on Trump&#8217;s <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/trump-backed-candidates-stumble-raising-democratic-hopes\">hand-picked candidates<\/a> in several <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/thiel-trump-senate-races\">crucial races<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The former president&#8217;s picks in Pennsylvania and Georgia are down in the polls. Dr. Mehmet Oz, the Republican Trump-backed nominee in Pennsylvania, is <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaign\/pennsylvania-race-leans-democrat-oz-trailing-polls\">trailing<\/a> his Democratic opponent, Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, by an average of 11 percentage points in the polls, while former NFL player Herschel Walker, <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/videos\/the-debrief-david-mark-on-warnocks-lead-over-walker-in-georgia-senate-race\">Trump&#8217;s pick in Georgia<\/a>, has been plagued by <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/herschel-walker-falsely-claims-he-was-fbi-agent\">missteps<\/a> and <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/herschel-walker-georgia-dismisses-paternity-criticism\">scandals<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>McConnell has been cautious about heralding a red wave before it comes. In April, he remarked that although the political environment looked like a &#8220;perfect storm&#8221; of problems for Democrats, it was &#8220;actually possible&#8221; that Republicans could &#8220;screw this up.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the Senate, if you look at where we have to compete in order to get into a majority, there are places that are competitive in the general election,&#8221; McConnell <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/3265655-mcconnell-actually-possible-for-gop-to-screw-up-midterms-with-unacceptable-candidates\/\">said<\/a>. &#8220;So, you can\u2019t nominate somebody who\u2019s just sort of unacceptable to a broader group of people and win.
