A recent lengthy Associated Press <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/covid-science-health-toronto-7c631558a457188d2bd2b5cfd360a867?taid=62f4f795a3b3e50001824753\">story<\/a> demonstrates how Canada has normalized euthanasia and a culture of death, in some cases as a way for the health system to save on expensive medical care.<\/p>\n<p>The country\u2019s single-payer health system has destroyed the ethical boundaries that should require doctors to work their utmost to save patients\u2019 lives, and instead now sees physicians broaching \u201cdeath with dignity\u201d as a way for the health care system to save a buck.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Obama\u2019s \u2018Difficult Conversations\u2019 Come to Life<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The AP obtained a recording from one patient with a degenerative brain condition, who recorded hospital personnel talking to him about his care. The recording shows the hospital\u2019s director of ethics telling the patient his care could cost \u201cnorth of $1,500 per day.\u201d When the patient asked about the plan for his long-term care, the physician-ethicist replied, \u201cMy piece of this was to talk to you, [to see] if you had an interest in assisted dying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a supposed \u201cethicist\u201d to mention the fees needed to care for a vulnerable patient\u2014and then, when the patient said he felt pressured by the discussion, to go further by broaching the topic of euthanasia\u2014violates every principle of ethics, in the medical profession and otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>The AP investigation makes clear this story does not present an aberration. For instance, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/newfoundland-labrador\/doctor-suggested-assisted-suicide-daughter-mother-elson-1.4218669\">reported on<\/a> an incident in which a doctor mentioned euthanasia to the parent of a 25-year-old woman with spina bifida\u2014within earshot of the young woman. When the mother complained about the doctor\u2019s \u201csuggestion,\u201d the physician called the mother selfish.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Coming to the United States?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>As most health policy-makers know, but few Americans outside Washington understand, Medicare faces severe financial pressures in the coming decades, as the Baby Boomers continue to retire. The program\u2019s rapidly spiraling costs represent one of the main reasons the Congressional Budget Office and others are projecting federal <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/03\/democrats-work-to-tax-and-spend-even-more-as-federal-debt-deficits-mushroom\/\">deficits and debt to skyrocket<\/a> in the years ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Yet Democrats have demonstrated no particular desire to take action to stem Medicare\u2019s shortfalls. On the contrary, in fact.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats recently <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/07\/19\/democrats-plan-to-snatch-medicare-dollars-from-seniors-to-subsidize-their-rich-friends\/\">raided Medicare<\/a> by nearly $300 billion to fund their Build Back Bankrupt system of Obamacare <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/03\/02\/how-democrats-covid-bill-gives-welfare-to-the-wealthy\/\">subsidies for the wealthy<\/a> and green energy pork projects. And Joe Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/09\/23\/biden-could-owe-as-much-as-500k-in-irs-taxes-report\/\">cheated on his taxes<\/a> in a way that he avoided <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/how-the-bidens-dodged-the-payroll-tax-11597083162\">nearly $400,000<\/a> in payroll taxes that fund the Medicare program.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, Democrats have shown enthusiasm for enacting a single-payer system of socialized medicine. Biden\u2019s vice president has <a href=\"http:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2019\/01\/31\/kamala-harris-reveals-medicare-means-ending-private-insurance\/\">endorsed it<\/a>; his Health and Human Services secretary has <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/12\/09\/joe-bidens-hhs-nominee-wants-a-compelete-government-takeover-of-health-care\/\">endorsed it<\/a>; and a majority of Democrats in the House of Representatives\u2014including Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/12\/13\/jeffries-mccarthy-house-election-524100\">potential successors<\/a> to Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.\u2014have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/house-bill\/1976\/cosponsors?q=%7B%22search%22%3A%5B%22hr1976%22%2C%22hr1976%22%5D%7D&#038;s=1&#038;r=1&#038;overview=closed#tabs\">endorsed it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So it\u2019s worth asking: If Democrats don\u2019t have a plan to fix Medicare\u2014and they don\u2019t\u2014and they do support socialized medicine systems like those in Canada, do they also support the Canadian efforts that try to pressure people into taking their own lives to save money?
