Ron DeSantis said on Aug. 18.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Office of Election Crimes and Security, in conjunction with the Attorney General\u2019s office and the FDLE [Florida Department of Law Enforcement], has charged and is in the process of arresting 20 individuals across the state for voter fraud,\u201d\u00a0<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/3606701-watch-live-florida-governor-ron-desantis-will-deliver-a-major-announcement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:DeSantis said\" data-rapid_p=\"16\" data-v9y=\"1\">DeSantis said<\/a>\u00a0during a press conference at Broward County Courthouse in Fort Lauderdale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe majority of these people illegally voted in Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami Dade, although there are others in other parts of the state,\u201d he said. \u201cThese people voted illegally in this case and there are going to be other grounds for other prosecutions in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are disqualified from voting because they have been convicted of either murder or sexual assault and they have been disfranchised under Florida Law.<\/p>\n<p>He added that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dos.myflorida.com\/elections\/for-voters\/voter-registration\/constitutional-amendment-4felon-voting-rights\/\">Amendment 4<\/a> of the state\u2019s Constitution specifically cites sexual assault and homicide as convictions precluding someone from having an \u201cautomatic restoration of their voting rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey did not go through any process. They did not get their rights restored. Yet they went ahead and voted anyway. That is against the law and now they\u2019re going to pay the price for it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo they will be charged, they are being charged and arrested today with election fraud. This is a third-degree felony in the state of Florida. They could face a $5,000 fine and up to five years in prison for illegally voting in our elections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The arrests mark some of the first actions undertaken by Florida\u2019s Office of Election Crimes and Security, a police unit created in Florida this year to crack down on voter fraud and other election crimes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese voters didn\u2019t just attempt to vote, they actually voted\u201d in<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Twenty people in Florida who had been disqualified from voting because of felony convictions are now facing voter fraud charges, Gov.
