Ron DeSantis announced on Thursday that the state has charged and will be arresting nearly two dozen individuals for committing voter fraud in state elections.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a press conference on election integrity, DeSantis revealed that the state\u2019s Office of Election Crimes and Security, in conjunction with the Florida Attorney General\u2019s office, had identified 20 people that had illegally cast ballots in recent elections, with a majority of the cases coming from Democrat strongholds such as Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade Counties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese folks voted illegally, in this case \u2026 they are disqualified from voting because they\u2019ve been convicted of either murder or sexual assault and they do not have the right to vote,\u201d DeSantis said. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"oTnhwyNqX6diaHAeQkrE13svWlzPxODGIfFJm4L5M2VUZtjg8bYBS09C7K\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">WATCH: Ron DeSantis announces his Office of Election Crimes and Security is charging and arresting individuals across the state for voter fraud<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These folks voted illegally\u2026 They are disqualified from voting because they have been convicted of either murder or sexual assault!&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/JhQY2SlOzN\">pic.twitter.com\/JhQY2SlOzN<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Florida\u2019s Voice (@FLVoiceNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FLVoiceNews\/status\/1560339199932469250?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 18, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The Florida Republican also went on to note that the state plans to \u201censure that all the records that [Florida has] from the most recent election in 2020 are preserved\u201d in order to guarantee that election laws are being followed. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do have ongoing reviews at the state level, and so we are putting out notice that all 67 supervisors of elections \u2026 need to make sure to preserve all the documentation until all these investigations are complete,\u201d DeSantis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IBkT4A1RET8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cWe want to make sure that when you start some prosecutions \u2026 you need to focus on anyone that violated the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody also echoed similar sentiments, saying that \u201cthe state of Florida is \u2026 tak[ing] election security very seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to recognize today that in order for a democracy to persevere, in order for us to remain a country and a state under a rule of law, we must have men and women that are willing to enforce those laws. And today is a recognition of that,\u201d Moody said.<\/p>\n<p>Back in April, DeSantis <a href=\"https:\/\/dr.flgov.com\/2022\/04\/25\/governor-ron-desantis-signs-bill-to-strengthen-floridas-election-integrity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">signed legislation<\/a> that created the Office of Election Crimes and Security, which falls under the jurisdiction of Florida\u2019s State Department. According to a press release on the bill, the newly established office was developed as a means \u201cto investigate election law violations\u201d and increase \u201cpenalties for violations of election laws.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other election integrity initiatives DeSantis has taken include the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flgov.com\/2021\/05\/06\/governor-ron-desantis-signs-bill-to-safeguard-the-sanctity-of-florida-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">signing<\/a> of SB 90, which in addition to banning \u201cZuckbucks\u201d and other private funding of election processes, strengthened voter identification, banned \u201cthe mass mailing of ballots,\u201d and outlawed ballot harvesting.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Shawn Fleetwood is a Staff Writer for The Federalist and a graduate of the University of Mary Washington.
