Currently, the Senate stands at 50-50, with Vice President Kamala Harris serving as a tie-breaker for the Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>McConnell has been cautious about Republicans taking over the Senate. In April, he said while the\u00a0political environment looked like a \u201cperfect storm\u201d for Democrats to lose the chamber,\u00a0Republicans could \u201cscrew this up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the Senate, if you look at where we have to compete in order to get into a majority, there are places that are competitive in the general election,\u201d McConnell <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/3265655-mcconnell-actually-possible-for-gop-to-screw-up-midterms-with-unacceptable-candidates\/\">said<\/a>. \u201cSo, you can\u2019t nominate somebody who\u2019s just sort of unacceptable to a broader group of people and win. We had that experience in 2010 and 2012.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0McConnell\u2019s comment Thursday is sure to fuel more criticism of his leadership as Senate minority leader. Previously, former President Donald Trump accused McConnell of embracing the \u201cstatus quo\u201d and \u201cbusiness as usual\u201d policies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Republican Party can never again be respected or strong with political \u2018leaders\u2019 like Sen.
