This discriminatory information control was an attempt to strong-arm Americans to embrace leftist orthodoxy.<\/p>\n<p>These and other instances of censorship are highlighted in MRC Free Speech America\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/censortrack.org\/\"> unique CensorTrack database<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Media Research Center&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/censortrack.org\/\">CensorTrack.org<\/a>, has identified and documented over 4,000 individual cases of censorship. For purposes of this report, we examined the second quarter of 2022. During that time, <strong>133 cases of censorship<\/strong> were identified. MRC Free Speech America analyzed the censored accounts and added the followers belonging to each person and group targeted by Big Tech during that three-month period. MRC Free Speech America found that secondhand censorship affected users no less than <strong>49,500,152 times <\/strong>during the second quarter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>MRC defines secondhand censorship as the number of times that users on social media had information kept from them.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Big Tech\u2019s <strong>49,500,152 times<\/strong> of keeping information from social media users in the second quarter follows <a href=\"https:\/\/censortrack.org\/secondhand-censorship-effect-real-impact-big-techs-thought-policing\"><strong>145,751,437 times<\/strong><\/a> in the first quarter that tech companies withheld information from platform users. MRC Free Speech America updated its first-quarter secondhand censorship number \u2013 adding about 1,449,724 times social media users had information kept from them \u2013 as more details of Big Tech\u2019s censorship have emerged since the previous study\u2019s July 20 publication.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>MRC continues to track instances of secondhand censorship across major social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Spotify<strong>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This secondhand censorship report only scratches the surface of censorship during the second quarter of 2022, as it only covers documented cases from our one-of-a-kind CensorTrack database.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>See this <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.mrc.org\/static\/reports\/Secondhand+Censorship+Tracking+-+Marketing+Q2-2.pdf\"><em>link<\/em><\/a><em> for a breakdown of our second-quarter secondhand censorship numbers<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3>Elections<\/h3>\n<p>MRC Free Speech America found that Big Tech kept <strong>election-related content <\/strong>from social media users no fewer than <strong>16,007,321 times<\/strong> from April to June, <strong>stemming from 15 individual cases of censorship.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The liberal<em> New York Times <\/em>complained in June that Facebook executives decided to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbusters.org\/blogs\/free-speech\/joseph-vazquez\/2022\/06\/25\/nyt-whines-zuckerberg-not-doing-enough-censor-election\"> censor less<\/a> election-related content during the 2022 election cycle than the platform censored during the 2020 election cycle.<\/p>\n<p>But contrary to the <em>Times<\/em>\u2019 reporting, MRC Free Speech America found that Facebook\u2019s election-related censorship persists at an alarming rate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The platform spiked an election-related post by Daily Wire Editor Emeritus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/author\/ben-shapiro\">Ben Shapiro<\/a> in May, with the help of its fact-checking partner PolitiFact, according to a May 10 CensorTrack <a href=\"https:\/\/censortrack.org\/case\/ben-shapiro\">entry<\/a>. The \u201cfact-checker\u201d flagged a Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/dinesh-dsouzas-2000-mules-movie-alleging-voter-fraud-makes-1-million-on-streaming-sites\">article<\/a> that cited political commentator <a href=\"https:\/\/dineshdsouza.com\/\">Dinesh D\u2019Souza<\/a>\u2019s documentary \u201c2000 Mules\u201d calling the article \u201cpartly false,\u201d as \u201cthe same information was checked in another post by independent fact-checkers.\u201d The movie examined voter fraud in the 2020 election by using cell phones\u2019 geolocation data. The <strong>secondhand censorship effect <\/strong>of the fact-check meant that Shapiro\u2019s <strong>8.5 million Facebook followers<\/strong> couldn\u2019t see information linking potential voter fraud to the 2020 election.<\/p>\n<p>The same Facebook fact-checker that censored Shapiro also censored conservative commentary website Twitchy over a social media post highlighting voter laws.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Georgia Attorney General <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChrisCarr_Ga?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1528531584793694209%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.politifact.com%2Ffactchecks%2F2022%2Fmay%2F24%2Fchris-carr%2Fno-stacey-abrams-didnt-support-baseball-all-star-g%2F%3Ffbclid%3DIwAR3yWT57t0-x1bW1P_4A79KnxAxeIoloqMNTQ3OJYJF_GmS3Q3uU0kUmUwY\">Chris Carr<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChrisCarr_Ga\/status\/1528531584793694209?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1528531584793694209%7Ctwgr%5Edf8c320cb48b8d07f95ece183a5298f454df873b%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.politifact.com%2Ffactchecks%2F2022%2Fmay%2F24%2Fchris-carr%2Fno-stacey-abrams-didnt-support-baseball-all-star-g%2F%3Ffbclid%3DIwAR3yWT57t0-x1bW1P_4A79KnxAxeIoloqMNTQ3OJYJF_GmS3Q3uU0kUmUwY\">tweeted<\/a> in May that second-time Georgia gubernatorial candidate<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/staceyabrams\"> Stacey Abrams<\/a> supported moving the 2021 MLB All-Star game from Atlanta to Denver because of allegedly stricter voting laws passed in her state. That post drew a \u201cfalse\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2022\/may\/24\/chris-carr\/no-stacey-abrams-didnt-support-baseball-all-star-g\/?fbclid=IwAR3yWT57t0-x1bW1P_4A79KnxAxeIoloqMNTQ3OJYJF_GmS3Q3uU0kUmUwY\">fact-check<\/a>, which cited an Abrams<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210331210632\/https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2021\/03\/31\/voter-suppression-will-corporations-redeem-themselves-column\/4820354001\/\"> op-ed<\/a> in <em>USA Today <\/em>that initially expressed a pro-boycott stance before being updated to express an anti-boycott viewpoint.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Twitchy <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mattdizwhitlock\/status\/1385677436558381056?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1385677436558381056%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitchy.com%2Fbrettt-3136%2F2022%2F05%2F25%2Fpolitifact-no-stacey-abrams-didnt-support-pulling-the-mlb-all-star-game-out-of-atlanta%2F\">tweeted<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mattdizwhitlock\/status\/1385677436558381056?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1385677436558381056%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitchy.com%2Fbrettt-3136%2F2022%2F05%2F25%2Fpolitifact-no-stacey-abrams-didnt-support-pulling-the-mlb-all-star-game-out-of-atlanta%2F\">side-by-side <\/a>excerpts from both versions of the op-ed. Facebook originally<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TeamTwitchy\/posts\/pfbid0M5gZM6X1Pjog68henUJsPd4APzJrb1WdSybU5xG53KCFQxSxUT1ySEKQckVjUYikl\"> flagged<\/a> the Twitchy article for &#8220;missing context,&#8221; slapping the same phony fact-check on the article, before removing the flag. The Facebook fact-check meant that Twitchy\u2019s <strong>1,080,200 Facebook followers<\/strong> were impeded from seeing the post.<\/p>\n<h3>President Joe Biden<\/h3>\n<p>CensorTrack.org second-quarter published entries reveal <strong>at least 6,917,208 times<\/strong> that Big Tech kept posts critical of President Joe Biden from social media users. That secondhand censorship calculation emerged from just<strong> seven <\/strong>individual cases of censored content.<\/p>\n<p>Another victim of Facebook\u2019s fact-checking censors was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texaspolicy.com\/\">Texas Public Policy Foundation<\/a> (TPPF) Chief Economist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texaspolicy.com\/about\/staff\/vance-ginn-ph-d\/\">Vance Ginn<\/a>. An April 1 CensorTrack <a href=\"https:\/\/censortrack.org\/case\/texas-public-policy-foundation\">entry<\/a> shows that the foundation shared a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TexasPolicy\/videos\/678628586786421\/\">video<\/a> interview featuring Ginn on Fox Business. During the interview, Ginn criticized gas price hikes, which he said resulted from Biden policy decisions to reduce U.S. oil drilling. Facebook claimed the post was &#8220;missing context&#8221; and linked to an AFP Fact Check <a href=\"https:\/\/factcheck.afp.com\/doc.afp.com.324Q7V7?fbclid=IwAR1qIKFggmDvkZ_uVTW7SmNkQc64Oitmrp4EQZJp617Hxo8_e5mqQmgVfY4\">article<\/a>. The fact-check called social media posts critical of Biden\u2019s oil policies \u201cmisleading,\u201d and claimed that &#8220;sharp swings\u201d in energy prices instead came from a \u201cvariety of factors.&#8221; Fact-checked posts<a href=\"https:\/\/morningconsult.com\/opinions\/how-were-tackling-misinformation-across-our-apps\/\"> lose exposure<\/a> and are negatively affected by the platform&#8217;s algorithm.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook\u2019s censorship potentially <strong>prevented<\/strong> <strong>TPPF\u2019s 306,000 Facebook followers from<\/strong> seeing basic economic and energy policy criticism of the Biden administration.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, TikTok and Facebook targeted five total MRCTV social media posts critical of Biden during the second quarter. The five posts amassed a combined secondhand censorship effect of <strong>6,586,208 times that Big Tech kept Biden criticism from social media followers of MRCTV<\/strong> in the second quarter.<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, Chinese Communist Party (CCP)-linked TikTok removed a clip of MRCTV host <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrctv.org\/author\/nick-kangadis\">Nick Kangadis<\/a> talking about the intelligence and empathy level (or lack thereof) of the Biden administration, as detailed in a June 15 CensorTrack <a href=\"https:\/\/censortrack.org\/case\/mrctv-54\">post<\/a>. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/clapperapp.com\/video\/gjxeaQROrqevWwk5?is_invite=1&#038;r=1qJ4az51oQ&#038;c=sh&#038;m=em\">clipped episode<\/a> of his show, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrctv.org\/author\/nick-kangadis\">Kangadis<\/a> talked about several flubs and gaffes of the Biden &#8220;regime,&#8221; as he called it. TikTok removed the video and rejected MRCTV&#8217;s appeal, giving only the vague explanation that the content violated its \u201cCommunity Standards.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The CCP-linked TikTok\u2019s censorship of Kangadis\u2019s Biden criticism kept information from social media <strong>users 79,900 times<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>\u201cTransgenderism\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>MRC counted <strong>25 individual cases <\/strong>of censorship of content critical of so-called \u201ctransgenderism\u201d in the second quarter. Secondhand censorship affected the followers of these accounts <strong>8,111,001 times during the quarter.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Twitter perpetrated the most substantial suppression of so-called \u201ctransgender\u201d-related content\u00a0 in the second quarter in June. The platform removed a post by renowned psychologist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jordanbpeterson.com\/\">Jordan Peterson<\/a> when he used \u201ctransgender\u201d actor Elliot Page\u2019s given name, Ellen Page.<\/p>\n<p>Secondhand censorship affected Peterson\u2019s followers <strong>2,800,000 times<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemember when pride was a sin? And Ellen Page just had her breasts removed by a criminal physician,\u201d Peterson purportedly tweeted according to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MikhailaFuller\/status\/1541946666567323649?s=20&#038;t=ujolRLXAT48gXM0nZx3Q8Q\">screenshots<\/a> tweeted by his daughter Mikhaila Peterson. Twitter apparently deemed the post to violate its rules against \u201chateful conduct.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another egregious example of censorship happened in April, when TikTok removed a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amalaekpunobi\/status\/1512513512928518144?s=20&#038;t=6In0pr43H_GXpJUZqshCYw\">video<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prageru.com\/\">PragerU<\/a> personality <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@amalaekpunobi?lang=en\">Amala Ekpunobi<\/a>. The platform labeled her criticisms of top surgery &#8220;Hate speech,\u201d according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/censortrack.org\/case\/amala-ekpunobi-1\">entry<\/a> in CensorTrack. As a result of this censorship action, secondhand censorship affected Ekpunobi\u2019s<strong> <\/strong>TikTok followers 599,400 times because they couldn\u2019t see her post opposing genital mutilation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Secondhand Censorship Totals by Platform<\/h3>\n<p>For the second quarter in a row, CensorTrack entries indicated that Facebook inflicted the most secondhand censorship of any platform.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Facebook<\/strong> users experienced secondhand censorship <strong>30,157,298 times<\/strong> in the second quarter, according to data logged in the MRC <a href=\"https:\/\/censortrack.org\/\">CensorTrack database<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The largest instance of Facebook\u2019s secondhand censorship in terms of follower count was the suppression of Shapiro\u2019s election-related post detailed in the \u201cElections\u201d section above.<\/p>\n<p>The No. 2 most egregious case of Facebook\u2019s second-quarter secondhand censorship happened on April 5, when the platform flagged a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=531448751673685&#038;set=a.418637839621444&#038;type=3&#038;theater\">pro-life post<\/a> by conservative influencers <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RealBenCarson\">Ben and Candy Carson<\/a> as \u201cmissing context.\u201d The post merely stated that Colorado Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colorado.gov\/governor\/\">Jared Polis<\/a> (D) had signed a law legalizing abortions \u201cup until the moment of birth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The former Housing and Urban Development secretary and his wife called the law \u201cdemonic.\u201d They had <strong>5,200,000 followers <\/strong>when they were censored.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Twitter <\/strong>\u2013 the second worst violator \u2013 withheld information from users through secondhand censorship <strong>12,845,270 times <\/strong>in the second quarter, according to CensorTrack.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter\u2019s most substantial instance of secondhand censorship is detailed in the Peterson \u201ctransgenderism\u201d critique highlighted above. But the platform\u2019s biased censorship affected the second largest number of viewers with secondhand censorship when it censored Human Events journalist <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JackPosobiec\">Jack Posobiec<\/a> on April 10. Posobiec posted on GETTR that his offending Twitter post called Disney \u201cgroomers\u201d \u2013 apparently referring to the company\u2019s opposition to a recent Florida law \u2013 according to a CensorTrack <a href=\"https:\/\/censortrack.org\/case\/jack-posobiec-3\">entry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, secondhand censorship affected Posobiec\u2019s followers <strong>1,700,000 times<\/strong> on the platform, preventing viewers from seeing his perspective opposing leftist gender indoctrination of children.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TikTok <\/strong>was the third worst violator in terms of secondhand censorship in the second quarter of 2022. The platform kept information from users a total of <strong>4,053,242 times<\/strong> in the second three months of this year.<\/p>\n<p>Secondhand censorship on TikTok walloped Young America\u2019s Foundation (YAF) harder than any other organization or individual in the second quarter.<\/p>\n<p>MRC Free Speech America counted <strong>six <\/strong>separate times that the Chinese Communist Party-affiliated app censored YAF in the second quarter, keeping information from users of the platform a total of <strong>1,311,700 times.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Akin to many other cases of censorship by TikTok, the platform did not provide a reason for its latest suppression of YAF in the second quarter, as highlighted in a June 16 CensorTrack <a href=\"https:\/\/censortrack.org\/case\/young-americas-foundation-7\">entry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>YAF, a youth organization that describes itself as the \u201cprincipal outreach organization of the Conservative Movement,\u201d makes TikTok videos on a variety of topics, including \u201ctransgender\u201d ideology, abortion, woke culture and capitalism.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in June, TikTok removed a YAF video of political commentator <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/benshapiro?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor\">Ben Shapiro<\/a> saying that supposed medical experts who believe in male pregnancy are not doctors but rather are activists, according to a June 15 CensorTrack <a href=\"https:\/\/censortrack.org\/case\/young-americas-foundation-9\">entry<\/a>. The deletion meant that YAF\u2019s <strong>187,200 TikTok followers<\/strong> couldn\u2019t see content featuring a science-based perspective on so-called \u201ctransgenderism.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>CONCLUSION<\/h3>\n<p>Secondhand censorship by Big Tech continues to impact social media users around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Censorship goes beyond silencing one person.
