Thanks to its memorable performances, quotable dialogue and inventive action set pieces, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/predator\/\" id=\"auto-tag_predator\" data-tag=\"predator\">Predator<\/a>\u201d became an American action movie staple. The film has spawned four sequels, including the new Hulu film \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/prey\/\" id=\"auto-tag_prey\" data-tag=\"prey\">Prey<\/a>,\u201d and two spinoffs. Yet, the mega franchise all started with a piece of paper underneath a door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Thomas brothers snuck the script onto the Fox lot and under somebody\u2019s door,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/john-davis\/\" id=\"auto-tag_john-davis\" data-tag=\"john-davis\">John Davis<\/a>, who has produced all seven \u201cPredator\u201d movies. \u201cWe got there on Monday, and there was this script. I was an executive at the time, and I had been working with <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/arnold-schwarzenegger\/\" id=\"auto-tag_arnold-schwarzenegger\" data-tag=\"arnold-schwarzenegger\">Arnold Schwarzenegger<\/a>. He was a really good friend of mine. We were always both trying to figure out how we could work together. And so I\u2019m the executive on this movie at Fox, and what happened is I became a producer. I auditioned to become a producer. And Arnold says, \u2018Well, you\u2019re becoming a producer now. You need to actually produce this movie and come to the jungle with me. Let\u2019s go make this.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first-time producer, finding himself on the set of \u201cPredator\u201d was an unforgettable experience. While the jungle was a bit different than the Fox offices Davis had known, things on set were made a little easier thanks to Schwarzenegger, who brought a private chef with him to the jungle every day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019d be in the jungle, and his chef would make like, smoked salmon on toast,\u201d Davis explains. \u201cI\u2019m thinking, \u2018This is crazy cool! I should do this the rest of my life!\u2019 You hang out with all these people in the jungle all day, and you\u2019re making this movie and you\u2019re doing these cool action scenes. And you\u2019re figuring out how to crash a helicopter and you\u2019re sweating with all these guys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And sweat they did. The producer recalls getting knocks on his door at 5:30 a.m. for morning workouts with Schwarzenegger and company, and, after one five-hour workout session that left Davis nearly unable to move, he concluded that he was \u201cnot going to survive this entire movie.\u201d Thanks to some fake sleeping antics, though, Davis did in fact survive the shoot. Still, 35 years later, Davis recalls the difficulty getting the movie to the big screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe ran out of money, so we didn\u2019t shoot the end,\u201d Davis remembers. \u201cAnd then a new head of the studio, Leonard Goldberg, came in. And he saw three quarters of the movie and he said \u2018Okay, it\u2019s pretty good. Why don\u2019t you guys just go finish it.\u2019 And I met [John] McTiernan somehow. I saw one movie he had done before and I said, \u2018This is the guy to direct this movie.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With John McTiernan on board, the film was coming together. McTiernan, the revered helmer behind \u201cDie Hard\u201d and \u201cThe Hunt for Red October,\u201d brought together an all-star cast of macho men, including Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, Kevin Peter Hall, Shane Black, Bill Duke, Sonny Landham and Jesse Ventura.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[McTiernan] never read any actors. His process was, \u2018I can tell in a conversation,&#8217;\u201d Davis explains. \u201cThat conversation would enlighten him to whether or not the actor was right for the movie. And at the end of the day, we had two governors in the movie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the day, \u201cPredator\u2019s\u201d manly-men made the film an action classic with bulging muscles and countless deaths. Thanks in large part to McTiernan\u2019s intense directing and Schwarzenegger\u2019s legendary performance, \u201cPredator\u201d has cemented itself into the action movie hall of fame. And, of course, having an outstandingly deadly and mysterious alien assuredly helped the film\u2019s cool-ness factor.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  alignnone wp-image-1235341841 size-large\">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   lrv-u-max-width-100p\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image\">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  lrv-u-font-size-12 lrv-u-font-family-secondary lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-text-align-left\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"lrv-u-font-size-14@desktop lrv-u-margin-t-050\">Director John McTiernan on the \u201cPredator\u201d set in 1987<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"lrv-u-color-grey u-font-family-basic\">\u00a920thCentFox\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe alien is an iconic creature. A comic monster, if you will,\u201d Davis says. \u201cMonster movies get made again and again and again and again. Look how many Dracula movies have been made. Or the Wolf Man. I mean, you can go through these iconic monsters or creatures. Once you establish them, people know them, understand the mythology of them and want to see them again in different situations. And I think both \u2018Alien\u2019 and \u2018Predator\u2019 on the 20th Century Fox side are their most mythic monsters. These are 20th Century Fox\u2019s most mythic creatures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Three years later, the franchise expanded with the first \u201cPredator\u201d sequel: \u201cPredator 2.\u201d The film, which now found the alien species ravaging the streets of Los Angeles, wasn\u2019t received as well as the first. Currently sitting at a 32% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes, \u201cPredator 2\u201d saw Danny Glover taking the reins from Schwarzenegger as the protagonist. However, Davis reveals that Arnold was in fact supposed to return as Duke for the film.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Thomas brothers wrote that also, and Stephen Hopkins directed it. It was a really wonderful script,\u201d Davis explains. \u201cArnold was gonna play [the lead] role. The studio was negotiating with him, and the whole deal fell apart over $250,000. And it was obvious: Joe Roth, who was the head of the studio at the time, just said, \u2018I won\u2019t go past this number\u2019 and Arnold wanted this other number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While two spinoffs \u00a0\u2014 \u00a0\u201cAlien vs. Predator\u201d and \u201cAlien vs. Predator: Requiem\u201d \u2014 came in the mid-2000s, it took 20 years for a direct sequel of the \u201cPredator\u201d franchise to get made. The 2010 film \u201cPredators\u201d saw a new group of killers being hunted down by the creature, this time on a different planet used solely for hunting. In 2018, Shane Black directed the modern-day take on the story with \u201cThe Predator.\u201d During the shooting of that film, Davis recalls being approached by \u201c10 Cloverfield Lane\u201d director Dan Trachtenberg, who floated the idea of a newly-imagined installment to the franchise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDan came to me and we went to the studio, and it was in the middle of making the other movie,\u201d Davis says. \u201cAnd we decided, \u2018Alright, let\u2019s do this, but we\u2019re gonna make it a top secret project.\u2019 So the whole idea was to keep this top secret. The other movie would come out, and then we would announce that we were ready right away to make this. Now, it took a lot longer than right away because different things happened and Fox got sold. It moved over into Disney, and I think it\u2019s great. Disney understood the potential of this franchise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With \u201cPrey,\u201d Trachtenberg takes the Predator to 1700s America. The film, which features Native American and First Nation talent in front of and behind the camera, follows a young Comanche woman as she takes on the alien with tomahawks, traps and ingenuity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDan did a terrific job,\u201d Davis says. \u201cThis movie is his imagination. This movie was his idea. People just need a fresh reinterpretation of this franchise from time to time. And if they have it, it will survive 100 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now that fans have seen the Yautja alien in Guatemala, Los Angeles, a different planet and the Comanche nation, it\u2019s only natural to wonder: what is next for the Predator? Could there be a Civil War-era Predator? How about Ancient Rome? Predator vs Pirates?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, maybe there\u2019s an origin origin story. Right?\u201d says Davis. \u201cMaybe there\u2019s another \u2018Alien vs. Predator\u2019 story in a different situation. And maybe there\u2019s a new modern-day version. And maybe there\u2019s something somewhere in between. I think this character can show up throughout history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, 1987\u2019s \u201cPredator\u201d is a time capsule of the action-packed Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone films that took over Hollywood in the 1980s. To Davis, shooting \u201cPredator\u201d was a representation of what Hollywood is dreamed to be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was neat. It was wonderful. It was glamorous. It was everything Hollywood was supposed to be,\u201d Davis says. \u201cArnold had decided we should all smoke cigars all the time. All the time. And then at the end of the movie, the studio gave us the bill for the cigars and we\u2019re like, \u2018Oh.
