And considering the impracticality of introducing regulations prior to the 2022 midterms, the Republican Party must make regulating Big Tech a top priority in order to ensure the integrity of the 2024 presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>According to Twitter, its Civic Integrity Policy \u201ccovers the most common types of harmful misleading information about elections and civic events\u201d by flagging \u201cmisleading content\u201d and, in some cases, outright suppressing content that contains \u201cfalse or misleading claim[s].\u201d But, with recent history as a guide, we can see that Twitter does not enforce this policy honestly.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, just weeks before the presidential election, Twitter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/technology\/twitter-has-refused-to-unlock-new-york-posts-account\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suppressed<\/a> discussion of Hunter Biden\u2019s laptop. The company went so far as to prevent users from sharing the New York Post story exposing the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/10\/14\/email-reveals-how-hunter-biden-introduced-ukrainian-biz-man-to-dad\/\">sca<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/10\/14\/email-reveals-how-hunter-biden-introduced-ukrainian-biz-man-to-dad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ndal<\/a> with one another, claiming that its circulation violated the company\u2019s policy on spreading information obtained via hacking. Coincidentally, Twitter did nothing to stop the circulation of leaked copies of Donald Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/09\/27\/us\/donald-trump-taxes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tax filings<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Why does this matter?<\/p>\n<p>Twitter justified its suppression of speech that <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/17\/after-throttling-the-hunter-biden-laptop-story-with-hacked-and-russian-disinformation-lies-propaganda-press-quietly-admit-it-was-completely-legit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">favored<\/a> a Republican incumbent by <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/04\/01\/new-york-times-finally-admit-hunters-laptop-is-real-but-only-to-protect-joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">falsely<\/a> designating it as ill-begotten misinformation while simultaneously doing nothing to crack down on the likely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/politics-news\/trump-tax-return-leak-illegal-986537\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">illegally<\/a> obtained information that damaged the same incumbent\u2019s reputation among the electorate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It just so happens that by suppressing negative stories about Joe Biden, Big Tech may have handed him the election as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnsnews.com\/article\/national\/alexander-watson\/poll-shows-media-censorship-cheated-voters-vital-info-robbed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">82 percent<\/a> of Biden voters in seven swing states were unaware of all of the scandals attached to him. Seventeen percent of these voters said that knowledge of these scandals before voting would have caused them to change their vote.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s integrity policy was applied in ways that specifically targeted speech favorable to the Republican Party. By censoring this speech, Twitter played a direct role in Joe Biden\u2019s ascension to the presidency.<\/p>\n<p>Social media\u2019s utility is largely the provision of a digital town square where people can share information with other people. So, ethically, ought companies that monetize user data obtained from speech-centric platforms not protect speech?<\/p>\n<p>But more importantly, considering how often Big Tech platforms such as Twitter act on behalf of the federal government, they must be held accountable for violating the First Amendment rights of American users. Corporations that function as extensions of the government must be compelled to uphold the constitutional protections of American citizens.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a July 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/press-briefings\/2021\/07\/15\/press-briefing-by-press-secretary-jen-psaki-and-surgeon-general-dr-vivek-h-murthy-july-15-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">briefing<\/a>, former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki explicitly stated that the Biden administration intended to collaborate with Big Tech to \u201cmonitor misinformation more closely\u201d and \u201cproactively address the public\u2019s questions without inadvertently giving a platform to health misinformation that can harm their audiences.\u201d She also acknowledged that the White House intended to reign in counter-regime narratives by \u201cbringing individuals and organizations together to address misinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The White House was so effective at persuading Big Tech to crack down on narratives in opposition to its own that social media companies <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/08\/12\/joe-biden-white-house-twitter-ban-alex-berenson-covid-vaccine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deplatformed journalists<\/a> who were too effective at asking questions about Biden\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/alexberenson.substack.com\/p\/the-white-house-privately-demanded?r=dqwj3&#038;s=r&#038;utm_campaign=post&#038;utm_medium=email&#038;utm_source=direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Covid strategy<\/a> and Covid vaccine efficacy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Agents of the government must be subject to the U.S. Consitution and prevented from infringing on the rights of American citizens. And despite what tech executives will say when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8hHyUEuvk48\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">testifying<\/a> before Congress, these companies are politically motivated and serve the interests of the political left. Is there any question as to whether Big Tech plans to mobilize in favor of Democrats again in 2024?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is far too late \u2014 and politically impossible \u2014 for congressional Republicans to introduce regulatory legislation that would reign in social media platforms like Twitter before the 2022 midterm elections. So, upon reclaiming control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, the GOP must act to secure digital free speech ahead of the 2024 presidential election.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Samuel Mangold-Lenett is a staff editor at The Federalist.
