Despite its name, many of the law\u2019s provisions don\u2019t relate specifically to espionage. <\/p>\n<p>The warrant also <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/uscode\/text\/18\/2071\">pointed<\/a><\/u> <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/uscode\/text\/18\/1519\">to<\/a><\/u> 18 U.S. Code 2071 on \u201cconcealment, removal, or mutilation generally\u201d and 18 U.S. Code 1519 on \u201cdestruction, alteration, or falsification of records in Federal investigations and bankruptcy.\u201d The latter relates to potential <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/law.justia.com\/codes\/us\/2012\/title-18\/part-i\/chapter-73\/section-1519\">obstruction of justice.<\/a><\/u> <\/p>\n<p><b><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/clinton-investigation-spotlight-trump-raid\">CLINTON EMAIL INVESTIGATION IN SPOTLIGHT AFTER MAR-A-LAGO RAID<\/a><\/b> <\/p>\n<div class=\"Enhancement\">\n<div class=\"Enhancement-item\">\n<figure class=\"Figure mb-1 mb-sm-3 mb-md-1 article-lead-photo data_invisible\" data-align=\"center\" data-image-size=\"fixed\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\">\n<div class=\"Figure-container\"><source media=\"(max-width: 768px)\" type=\"image\/webp\" data-image-size=\"1060x600_md\" \/><source media=\"(max-width: 768px)\" data-image-size=\"1060x600_md\" \/><source media=\"(max-width: 1440px)\" type=\"image\/webp\" data-image-size=\"1060x600_xl\" \/><source media=\"(max-width: 1440px)\" data-image-size=\"1060x600_xl\" \/><source type=\"image\/webp\" data-image-size=\"1060x600\" \/><source data-image-size=\"1060x600\" \/><figcaption class=\"Figure-caption\" itemprop=\"caption\">\n                President Donald Trump&#8217;s Mar-a-Lago estate is shown, Wednesday, July 10, 2019, in Palm Beach, Fla.<br \/>\n               <\/figcaption><div class=\"Figure-credit\" itemprop=\"author\">\n                (Wilfredo Lee\/AP)\n               <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart, who had also signed the Aug. 5 warrant for the Aug. 8 raid, ordered that the warrant to be unsealed after the Justice Department told the court that Trump wasn&#8217;t objecting to it being made public. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government has carefully considered whether the affidavit can be released subject to redactions,\u201d the Justice Department said Monday. \u201cThe redactions necessary to mitigate harms to the integrity of the investigation would be so extensive as to render the remaining unsealed text devoid of meaningful content, and the release of such a redacted version would not serve any public interest.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>DOJ said that if the judge ordered a partial unsealing of the affidavit anyway, \u201cthe government respectfully requests an opportunity to provide the Court with proposed redactions.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The department lawyers added that DOJ \u201cdoes not object to unsealing other materials filed in connection with the search warrant whose unsealing would not jeopardize the integrity of this national security investigation, subject to minor redactions to protect government personnel.\u201d It said those documents include the cover sheets associated with the search warrant application, DOJ\u2019s original motion to seal, and the court\u2019s original sealing order. <\/p>\n<p>DOJ said its \u201cproposed redactions to those documents have been filed under seal\u2026 and the government now asks the Court to unseal the materials contained in that filing.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Attorney General <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/merrick-garland\">Merrick Garland<\/a><\/u> <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/doj-trump-fbi-raid-warrant-unsealed-garland\">said<\/a><\/u> last week he \u201cpersonally approved the decision to seek a search warrant.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>The items seized by the FBI last week included \u201cvarious classified \/ TS [top secret] \/ SCI [sensitive compartmented information] documents,\u201d four \u201cmiscellaneous top secret documents,\u201d three \u201cmiscellaneous secret documents,\u201d two \u201cmiscellaneous confidential documents,\u201d and one \u201cconfidential document.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Trump and his allies said he declassified the records, with the former president <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense-national-security\/trump-standing-order-declassify-records\">contending<\/a><\/u> he had a \u201cstanding order\u201d throughout his presidency that \u201cdocuments removed from the Oval Office and taken to the residence were deemed to be declassified the moment he removed them.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The property to be seized included documents constituting \u201cevidence\u201d of violations of the listed criminal statutes, including \u201cany physical documents with classification markings\u201d along with any boxes containing that information and any other containers stored with those records.
