Ed Markey (D-Mass.), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us-lawmakers-make-unannounced-trip-to-taiwan-2-weeks-after-pelosi-visit_4663635.html\">arrived<\/a> in Taipei late on Aug. 14. Their unannounced two-day trip came on the heels of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/pelosi-arrives-in-taiwan-amid-chinese-threats-of-military-violence_4637871.html\">a similar visit<\/a> by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) that drew the wrath of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese military organized \u201cmulti-service joint combat readiness patrols\u201d and \u201cactual combat drills\u201d in the sea and air spaces near Taiwan, Wu Qian, spokesperson of Beijing\u2019s Defense Ministry said in an Aug. 15\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mod.gov.cn\/topnews\/2022-08\/15\/content_4918299.htm\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The new drills were a \u201cresolute response and solemn deterrence to U.S-Taiwan collusion,\u201d Wu said. \u201cThe Chinese People\u2019s Liberation Army (PLA) continues to train and prepare for war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The communist regime in Beijing views the self-ruled island as its own territory, to be taken by force if necessary. It is also against any official exchanges between Taiwan and other governments around the world that might suggest its status as a de facto island-state.<\/p>\n<p>The latest announcement came after the CCP drew <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/g7-calls-on-china-to-stop-threatening-actions-around-taiwan_4640461.html\">international condemnation<\/a> for using Pelosi\u2019s visit earlier in August as a pretext to launch a series of escalated military operations.
