And on Monday, The Daily Signal\u2019s Douglas Blair questioned the D.C. mayor about \u201chow she could justify forcing 40% of unvaccinated black students to stay home from school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy is the District continuing with this policy when it seems to disproportionately impact black students?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think that number is correct,\u201d Bowser responded, though the numbers Blair cited coincide with those put forth by the D.C. Department of Health. \u201cWe have substantially fewer number of kids that we have to engage with vaccination. And I explained why it\u2019s important. It\u2019s important for the public health of our students and that we can maintain safe environments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I asked D.C. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MayorBowser?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@MayorBowser<\/a> how she could justify forcing 40% of unvaccinated black students to stay home from school. Department of Health told The Daily Wire on August 4 that \u201capproximately 85% of children age 12-17, and 60% of African-American children age 12-17, are known to have already received two doses of COVID-19 vaccine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe actual percentages are likely higher because not all vaccines administered outside of the District are known to D.C. Health,\u201d Deputy Public Information Officer Kelsey Felton said at the time.<\/p>\n<p>The Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Monday, but Blair pointed out that D.C. Department of Health statistics <a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirus.dc.gov\/data\/vaccination\">indicate<\/a> that the number of unvaccinated black students is still at 40%.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This chart is available on the Washington D.C. Coronavirus Response website and shows clearly that the 12+ age bracket has a vaccination rate of 60%, meaning 40% of black kids are unvaccinated. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/eMZSAzscj6\">pic.twitter.com\/eMZSAzscj6<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Douglas Blair (@DouglasKBlair) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DouglasKBlair\/status\/1559226045663961088?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 15, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>D.C.\u2019s Council, rather than a school board, <a href=\"https:\/\/wtop.com\/dc\/2021\/12\/dc-council-approves-covid-19-vaccine-mandate-for-students\/\">made<\/a>\u00a0the decision to mandate the vaccine despite a Council Office of Racial Equity (CORE)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wtop.com\/dc\/2021\/12\/report-warns-covid-19-vaccine-mandate-for-dc-students-could-increase-racial-inequity\/\">report<\/a>\u00a0on the legislation that found \u201cenforcement of the bill will exacerbate racial inequity by disproportionately removing Black students from school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis may result in increased learning loss, additional negative social and educational outcomes and in blocking students from vital school resources,\u201d the report found.<\/p>\n<p>Bowser has not responded to requests for comment from The Daily Wire on this point.<\/p>\n<p>A Kaiser Family Foundation survey\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/coronavirus-covid-19\/poll-finding\/kff-covid-19-vaccine-monitor-july-2022\/\">released in late July<\/a> found that many parents don\u2019t plan to get their child vaccinated against COVID, citing \u201cconcerns about the newness of the vaccine and not enough testing or research, concerns over side effects, and worries over the overall safety of the vaccines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The survey also found that \u201cabout one in ten parents say they do not think their child needs the vaccine or say they are not worried about COVID-19.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the survey reported that 44% of black parents with unvaccinated kids between six months and four years old are concerned that getting their child vaccinated would mean that they take time off work (or that the vaccine would give the child side effects that would require the parent to take time off work).<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, 45% of Hispanic parents expressed fears that they would not be able to get their children vaccinated at a trustworthy place.<\/p>\n<p>Some parents (53%) even view the vaccine as a greater danger to their child\u2019s health than COVID itself.
