And this cannot be blamed on the China Flu or an overheated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/americans-are-increasingly-dubious-going-college-rcna40935\">job market<\/a>:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote>\n<p>But while the pandemic certainly made things worse, the downturn took hold well before it started. Demographics alone cannot explain the scale of this drop. And statistics belie the argument that recent high school graduates are getting jobs instead of going to college: Workforce participation for 16- to 24-year-olds\u00a0is lower\u00a0than it was\u00a0before Covid hit, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, or BLS, reports.<\/p>\n<p>Focus groups and public opinion surveys point to other, less easily solved reasons for the sharp downward trend. These include widespread and fast-growing skepticism about the value of a degree, impatience with the time it takes to get one, and costs that have finally exceeded many people\u2019s ability or willingness to pay.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Over just four years, between 2016 and 2020, the percentage of high school graduates enrolling in college dropped from 70 percent to 63 percent. That\u2019s a seven-point drop nationally. In certain states, it decreased even more. In Tennessee, it dropped 11 points to 53 percent. Indiana dropped 12 points to 53 percent. West Virginia dropped 10 points to just 46 percent.<\/p>\n<p>So what is it that\u2019s turning millions of Americans off college? Obviously, the insane cost of a degree is dissuading people from higher education. According to this report, \u00a0\u201cFewer than 1 in 3 adults now say\u00a0a degree is worth the cost.\u201d What\u2019s more, more \u201cthan 4 in 10 bachelor\u2019s degree holders under 45 don\u2019t agree that\u00a0the benefits of their educations exceeded the costs[.]\u201d So what you have are parents and older siblings warning the younger generation off the idea of incurring the equivalent of a mortgage just to go to college.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10270704\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media.breitbart.com\/media\/2019\/03\/Student-Loan-Debt-.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Representation of student debt\u00a0 (PAUL J. RICHARDS\/AFP\/Getty)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Then there\u2019s this: \u201cFrom 2015 to 2019, Americans\u2019 faith in higher education\u00a0dropped more than their confidence in any other institution\u00a0measured by the Gallup polling organization.\u201d The NBC report calls this an \u201cextraordinary erosion of trust, considering that this list includes the presidency, Congress, big business and the criminal justice system.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>I\u2019m not anti-college. Personally, I think it\u2019s important for doctors, rocket scientists, and brain surgeons to attend a university. Higher education can also be a great life experience. But when you\u2019re looking at an average of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bestcolleges.com\/research\/average-cost-of-college\/\">$120K<\/a> for a four-year degree, you\u2019d better be sure about what you want to do.<\/p>\n<p>Universities are also gaining a reputation for being intolerant, fascist, left-wing brainwashing operations that no longer teach critical thinking. This is undoubtedly turning a lot of people off. When I was young, high school students saw college as a time to be free and experiment. If you wanted regimentation and being told what to think, you joined the military \u2014 where you at least got paid a salary. Who wants to pay $120,000 to be bossed around by woketards with no real world experience?<\/p>\n<p>The federal government should never have gotten involved in the student loan business. That\u2019s the whole problem here. That\u2019s why costs have skyrocketed. These easy loans have allowed universities to expand and explode costs, which have come at the expense of the students.<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re 18 and have your whole life ahead of you, the idea of taking on that much debt hardly seems real.
