The standard protocol for gender affirmation is administering puberty blockers, followed by cross-sex hormones and then surgery, if desired.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/american-academy-of-pediatrics-refuses-to-reconsider-radical-gender-affirmation-approach-despite-pushback\">Resolution 27<\/a>, submitted by five AAP pediatrician members in March of this year, requested a thorough and systematic evaluation of the available evidence to update their position.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>The AAP says that it is open to &#8220;collaborative conversations&#8221; on its policy, but a new rule prevents pediatricians from contributing to the discussion.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>To let their voices be heard, members took to airing their concerns in the comments section for a separate resolution in the AAP&#8217;s members-only website.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>The private comments were leaked to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-11099561\/Leaked-internal-files-pediatricians-angry-professional-bodys-transgender-policy.html\">DailyMail<\/a><\/em>, where AAP members said the academy was &#8220;endorsing great harm,&#8221; that its policy for trans-identifying teens was based on &#8220;scant and shoddy&#8221; evidence and that handing out drugs and hormones was &#8220;unsafe and unsustainable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<figure class=\"kg-card kg-image-card\"><\/figure>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<figure class=\"kg-card kg-image-card\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.thepostmillennial.com\/content\/images\/2022\/08\/61269691-11099561-image-m-23_1660166064279.jpg\" class=\"kg-image\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<figure class=\"kg-card kg-image-card\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.thepostmillennial.com\/content\/images\/2022\/08\/61269691-11099561-image-m-25_1660166105712.jpg\" class=\"kg-image\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<figure class=\"kg-card kg-image-card kg-card-hascaption\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.thepostmillennial.com\/content\/images\/2022\/08\/61269697-11099561-image-m-29_1660166174289.jpg\" class=\"kg-image\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-11099561\/Leaked-internal-files-pediatricians-angry-professional-bodys-transgender-policy.html\">DailyMail<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>&#8220;Before promulgating gender-affirming care, with all of its ethical implications (irreversible bodily changes, sterility, etc.) \u2026 don&#8217;t we want to be sure this is the best path?&#8221; wrote one pediatrician.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Another said there was &#8220;no good long-term outcome data&#8221; for those who undergo medical transition, and pointed to the 37,000+ members of an online <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/detrans\/\">forum<\/a> for regretful &#8220;detransitioners.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>&#8220;What is most needed right now is better research to make sure we do the right thing for our patients,&#8221; wrote the pediatrician.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>The <em>Daily Mail<\/em> reports that one AAP member complained they were &#8220;unable to comment&#8221; on the document; another said they &#8220;no longer trust the AAP&#8221; as the resolution was &#8220;removed&#8221; and &#8220;debate on the matter was silenced egregiously.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>&#8220;There is NO open dialogue on these medical treatments by the AAP,&#8221; said another.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>&#8220;Input from the membership MUST occur.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Julia Mason, a pediatrician from Oregon and advisor for the Society for Evidence-based Gender Medicine, who was one of five authors of Resolution 27, said ever-more colleagues across the US wanted to &#8220;slow down&#8221; the mass handout of puberty-blockers and spend more time evaluating trans-identifying teens, the <em>Daily Mail <\/em>reports.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m really disappointed the AAP is being driven by ideology, rather than evidence,&#8221; Mason told the <em>Daily Mail<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re embarrassed that they&#8217;ve let young activist doctors get them on record in support of gender-affirming care, and now they can&#8217;t backtrack.
