Democratic Taiwan has been self-governed since 1949, however, and has never been controlled by the CCP.<\/p>\n<p>The United States formally recognizes, but does not endorse, China\u2019s position. It is also treaty-bound to provide Taiwan with the arms necessary for self-defense.<\/p>\n<p>Campbell said \u201cChina\u2019s provocative behavior\u201d following Pelosi\u2019s visit to Taiwan was undermining peace and stability throughout the entire Indo-Pacific region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast week the PRC used a visit of the [U.S. Speaker of the House] \u2026 as a pretext to launch an intensified pressure campaign against Taiwan,\u201d Campbell said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina has overreacted and its actions<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Joe Biden will likely meet with Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leader Xi Jinping later in the year for the pair\u2019s first face-to-face, according to a White House official.
