An endless war. From nowhere, an unexpected leader emerges. Young, poor and about to spark a revolution. This is Joan. Rebelling against the world\u2019s expectations, questioning the gender binary, Joan finds their power and their belief spreads like fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJoin us in the wooden \u2018O\u2019 and feel the heat of the sun and the pulse of Joan\u2019s passion,\u201d the synopsis continued. \u201cWith open hearts and raised voices, dance and cheer with us as we rediscover Joan\u2019s story. It\u2019s alive, queer and full of hope.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Artistic Director Michelle Terry says the presentation of Joan as gender neutral is not unprecedented. She said \u201cthey\/them\u201d pronouns are consistent with history \u201cas early as 1375,\u201d per a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shakespearesglobe.com\/identity-in-i-joan\">statement<\/a> on identity in \u201cI, Joan.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not the first to present Joan in this way, and we will not be the last. It is a recharacterisation of something that did not even exist at the time,\u201d Furedi told the publication.<\/p>\n<p>The Globe writes that it is \u201cunequivocally pro-human rights\u201d which \u201cincludes trans people, non-binary people, black and minority ethnic people, and people with disabilities. Trans men and women and non-binary identities exist and are valid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joan of Arc was a military leader who defeated the English at the siege of Orl\u00e9ans during the Hundred Years\u2019 War despite being a young woman at the time. She was captured and burned at the stake as a heretic, though she was later exonerated for her crimes.
