While legitimate violence should be swiftly shut down, it\u2019s not hard to imagine abuses and extrapolations coming from the same agency that invoked domestic terrorism laws to go after parents who showed up to protest at their kids\u2019 school board meetings.<\/p>\n<p>The media quickly ran with Wray\u2019s attempt to distract from his own agency\u2019s targeting of political opponents by highlighting the reaction from the right and specifically the potential for fringe threats. \u201cTrump\u2019s allies apparently unbothered about possibility of getting someone killed,\u201d Vanity Fair <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2022\/08\/donald-trump-fox-news-fbi-doj-judge-death-threats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blared<\/a>. \u201cAuthorities monitoring online threats following FBI\u2019s Mar-a-Lago raid,\u201d ABC <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/authorities-monitoring-online-threats-fbis-mar-lago-raid\/story?id=88199587\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a>. \u201cSimmering threat of violence comes to fore with search of Trump property,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2022\/08\/09\/trump-violence-threats-fbi-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> The Washington Post.<\/p>\n<p>Oddly enough, I don\u2019t remember hearing the same denunciation of violence after the Supreme Court found it was unconstitutional for the bench to bar elected state legislatures from restricting abortion. In the three months following the <em>Dobbs<\/em> decision leak, the Family Research Council <a href=\"https:\/\/downloads.frc.org\/EF\/EF22F17.pdf\">chronicled<\/a> 34 attacks on churches and 53 attacks on pro-life organizations and offices and pregnancy care centers. Several of the attacks involved <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/06\/25\/christian-pregnancy-center-in-colorado-vandalized-burned-after-roe-v-wade-reversal\/\">firebombing<\/a>, attempted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/news\/crime\/2022\/06\/30\/nashville-pregnancy-center-molotov-cocktail-breaks-window-janes-revenge-abortion\/7780855001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">arson<\/a>, and smashing windows on top of threatening or hateful graffiti proclaiming, \u201cIf abortions aren\u2019t safe, then you aren\u2019t either.\u201d Radical abortion group \u201cJane\u2019s Revenge\u201d took credit for many of the attacks, but an FBI spokeswoman in June <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/06\/08\/what-will-the-fbi-do-about-the-alarming-number-of-attacks-on-pro-life-centers-following-scotus-leak\/\">refused<\/a> to tell The Federalist whether the group was facing investigation.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"GXedKKDiog5IzUuADrtilnFkmWE3YOvLF0GhTf2o97tE7xk4ssaPcH6yNNnuCJ12UClZwmZLAbSdqpvVMb63cBf9\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">BREAKING: Somebody vandalized and allegedly threw Molotov cocktails into Wisconsin Family Action\u2019s \u2014 an anti-abortion rights group \u2014 Madison office, writing w\/ graffiti, \u201cIf abortions aren\u2019t safe, then you aren\u2019t either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story TK <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6Wfnyeh9hQ\">pic.twitter.com\/6Wfnyeh9hQ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Alexander Shur (@AlexanderShur) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AlexanderShur\/status\/1523320097993076737?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 8, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Fox News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/twitter-allows-some-threats-against-conservative-scotus-justices-pro-life-pregnancy-centers-flourish\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> that the \u201cMedia Research Center found 67 posts threatening or calling for violence against Supreme Court Justices\u201d on social media in the two weeks following the <em>Dobbs <\/em>decision. People online openly <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/05\/19\/supreme-court-justices-get-around-the-clock-home-security-amid-threats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fantasized<\/a> about killing the justices in the majority, including Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas. Blue check marks on Twitter <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/05\/03\/lets-burn-this-place-down-left-calls-for-violence-after-treasonous-scotus-abortion-leak\/\">rushed<\/a> to insist we should \u201cburn down\u201d the court and the country at large. A shady group called \u201cRuth Sent Us\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/06\/08\/left-wing-group-that-doxxed-scotus-justices-home-addresses-downplays-death-threat-against-kavanaugh\/\">published<\/a> justices\u2019 private home addresses and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.cbn.com\/cbnnews\/us\/2022\/june\/abortion-group-ruth-sent-us-suggests-targeting-justice-amy-coney-barretts-children-and-church\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suggested<\/a> targeting the school where Justice Amy Coney Barrett\u2019s children attend. Pro-abortion demonstrators tried to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/06\/27\/pro-abortion-demonstrators-unleash-weekend-of-arson-vandalism-and-insurrection-after-dobbs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">breach<\/a> the Arizona Capitol. Demonstrators swarmed justices\u2019 private residences in an intimidation campaign. A would-be assassin confessed to an attempt on Justice Brett Kavanaugh\u2019s life and was arrested near the justice\u2019s home.<\/p>\n<p>If any of those threats or violence had come from Trump supporters in the wake of the FBI\u2019s raid on Mar-a-Lago, is there any doubt the FBI would have already dragged them away?<\/p>\n<p>But unlike this time, after the violent outrage over <em>Dobbs<\/em>, the FBI didn\u2019t come running out with a statement condemning the violence. Its parent, the DOJ, issued a long <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/attorney-general-merrick-b-garland-statement-supreme-court-ruling-dobbs-v-jackson-women-s\">statement<\/a> \u201cstrongly disagreeing \u201d with the court\u2019s decision, with only two short sentences in the sixth paragraph promising the DOJ would \u201cnot tolerate such acts.\u201d It took <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/06\/17\/a-month-and-a-half-after-dobbs-leak-fbi-says-they-will-investigate-attacks-on-pro-life-groups-pregnancy-centers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">44 days<\/a> after the <em>Dobbs<\/em> opinion leaked, however \u2014 along with multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/restoring-america\/fairness-justice\/grassley-wray-investigate-threat-pro-abortion-violent-extremism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pleas<\/a> from elected officials \u2014 for the FBI to even say it would investigate the incidents. Since then, we\u2019ve heard pitifully little.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, after <em>Dobbs<\/em>, news outlets such as The Washington Post ran <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/06\/29\/dobbs-roe-violence-protests-supreme-court-clinics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">headlines<\/a> like \u201cWhen is political violence justified?\u201d which if you look very carefully you can distinguish from their fearmongering about the right\u2019s outrage toward the FBI.<\/p>\n<p>The media and federal law enforcement\u2019s willful ignorance of politically convenient violence over <em>Dobbs<\/em> was a swing from the dramatic hand-wringing over a foolish riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/01\/05\/us\/politics\/jan-6-capitol-deaths.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">painted<\/a> as \u201cdeadly\u201d despite the fact that the only person who died <em>as a result<\/em> of the scuffle was shot by Capitol Police. The prolonged crackdown on law-abiding citizens even remotely affiliated with the peaceful protest that preceded the Capitol riot also constituted an abrupt change from leftists\u2019 push to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/08\/27\/cnn-chyron-on-kenosha-fiery-but-mostly-peaceful-protests-after-police-shooting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">downplay<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/08\/31\/meet-the-rioting-criminals-kamala-harris-helped-bail-out-of-jail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bail out<\/a> violent demonstrators over the summer of 2020 who were useful to Democrats\u2019 political agenda.<\/p>\n<p>The FBI\u2019s reaction to outrage over its targeting of a political enemy is just the latest flip in its continual flop between excusing one brand of political violence and making a dramatic example of another. Almost 80 percent of likely American voters believe there is a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/09\/4-in-5-americans-see-two-tiered-justice-system-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">two-tiered<\/a> system of justice in their country, and the FBI\u2019s blatant double standard is proving them right.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Elle Reynolds is an assistant editor at The Federalist, and received her B.A. in government from Patrick Henry College with a minor in journalism.
