Chandler Hospital in Lexington, where staff admitted him into intensive care before pumping air in and out of his lungs on a ventilator for about four days until he later died on August 5.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe do not know the reason and have no explanation for what happened,\u201d Crawford said.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Crawford described her son to the Herald-Leader as the \u201ckindest sweetest kid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI know everyone thinks their kid is the best, but he was special,\u201d she said. \u201cHe wanted to help people even before the rain had stopped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mick\u2019s desire to serve stemmed from his deep-rooted faith in Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">His mother said he would pray for anyone he met and would not hesitate to ask if they knew about Jesus.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIf Mick could give us his final wish, it would be that everyone come to know Jesus because that\u2019s the most important thing in this world to him,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Pastor and friend Perry County Sherrif Joe Engle echoed Crawford\u2019s sentiments, and said that the teen\u2019s death was a crushing loss for the community.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cHe was just a joy to be around,\u201d Engle told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/aaron-mick-crawford-teen-mysteriously-death-kentucky-flooding\/\">CBS News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Engle last heard from Mick when the teen asked the sheriff where he could assist victims while torrential rains flooded and swallowed up multiple counties across the region, causing residents to search for high ground until rescue teams could arrive.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAs soon as we understood we had a major disaster going on here, he messaged me,\u201d the sheriff said. \u201cI\u2019m not sure it had even quit raining yet by the time he sent me a message on Facebook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWanting to know where to go. Wanting to know where to help,\u201d Mick\u2019s message reportedly said.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Engle said he believes Mick\u2019s entire life was about making those around him better.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThat\u2019s how he lived, and when he died, he made others \u2014 even strangers \u2014 lives better,\u201d said Engle.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI love him and will miss my friend,\u201d Engle said.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mick had also involved himself in high school sports, where he led the football and wrestling teams, showing up to practice every day ready to work, while displaying maturity beyond his years.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cHe was just the type of kid, you know, he never came to practice in a bad mood,\u201d Knott County Central athletic director Justin Amburgey told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wymt.com\/2022\/08\/08\/knott-county-central-athletics-remember-aaron-mick-crawford\/\">WYMT<\/a>. \u201cHe was always very positive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Knott County Central wrestling coach Jonathan Aldana said, \u201cEverything that he did, and everything that he was, he always wanted to make sure he was doing everything the right way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWhen I heard the news about Mick, my heart just sank because you know that\u2019s a person you want in your community,\u201d Aldana said.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear called Mick a \u201cheroic\u201d student on\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovAndyBeshear\/status\/1556692416320651265\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Twitter<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0early this week.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cBritainy and I are praying for the family of Aaron Crawford, a heroic high school student in Knott County who was bravely helping in the recovery efforts following the flooding,\u201d Beshear said. \u201cThis is another tragic loss for Eastern Kentucky.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cLet us mourn together and honor Aaron, his compassion and kindness for his neighbors,\u201d Beshear added.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Beshear established a relief fund for flood victims that will also help pay for the funeral expense for Crawford\u2019s family.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mick Crawford was the youngest of eight, with five brothers and two sisters. <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.englebowlingfuneralhome.com\/obituary\/aaron-crawford\">Funeral services<\/a> for Mick were held on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>State officials announced the death toll increased to 39 victims on Thursday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A high school athlete mysteriously fell ill and died last week while aiding in relief efforts after catastrophic flooding in Eastern Kentucky ravaged several communities, swept away homes, and killed nearly 40 residents.
