Deadlines for all the branches arrived before the end of the year. National Guard personnel and reservists were allowed to wait until mid-2022, but those who aren\u2019t vaccinated and have not received an exemption were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/40000-army-national-guard-troops-face-pay-loss-discharge-as-covid-vaccine-deadline-kicks-in_4571563.html\">cut off from their paychecks<\/a> in July and threatened with possible separation if they don\u2019t get vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p>Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and other military leaders have said the mandate was imposed to ensure military readiness.<\/p>\n<p>The mandate \u201cis necessary to protect the Force and defend the American people,\u201d Austin said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/defense-secretary-orders-us-troops-to-quickly-get-vaccinated-against-covid-19_3964787.html\">a memorandum<\/a> to senior leaders in August 2021.<\/p>\n<p>But Maj. Gen. James Eifert, commanding general of the Florida National Guard, said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/vaccine-mandate-puts-national-security-at-risk-involuntary-termination-armed-forces-military-covid-pandemic-lockdowns-11659645396\">a Wall Street Journal op-ed<\/a> that the requirements aren\u2019t protecting the military.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSound policy must be more beneficial than detrimental; the military\u2019s Covid mandate decidedly isn\u2019t. The benefits of vaccination are limited. Existing vaccines don\u2019t prevent transmission of the dominant variants. And the virus has become less capable of rendering severe clinical outcomes, while effective treatments are now available for those who do get sick,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Eifert said he backed mandates when U.S. authorities initially said the vaccines were highly effective against infection and severe illness, \u201cbut the circumstances have once changed,\u201d with effectiveness being dramatically lower than once thought, and a number of adverse events being detected after the clinical trials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs our knowledge of risk changes, shouldn\u2019t our policy change with it?\u201d Eifert said.<\/p>\n<p>Even before the vaccines were available, military readiness was only hindered by quarantine requirements and lockdowns, not COVID-19, according to Eifert.
