The new paper envisions far less autonomy for the Taiwanese after Beijing takes control \u2014 something the title of the new paper implies will happen soon, as it refers to the \u201cNew Era,\u201d a common synonym for the rule of current dictator Xi Jinping.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>The previous papers included a promise that China \u201cwill not send troops or administrative personnel to be based in Taiwan\u201d after \u201creunification,\u201d but the new paper omitted that line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>China has long dangled the prospect of Taiwan \u201creunifying\u201d under a \u201cone country, two systems\u201d model similar to Hong Kong. The Taiwanese were never terribly enthusiastic about the offer \u2014 and they became <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/freedom-has-vanished-taiwan-says-hong-kong-anniversary-2022-07-01\/\"><span>markedly less so<\/span><\/a><span> after China tossed aside its promises of autonomy to Hong Kong in 2020, overriding the Hong Kong legislature to impose a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/news\/hong-kong-should-repeal-sweeping-national-security-law-u-n-experts-say\/\"><span>nakedly authoritarian<\/span><\/a><span> \u201cnational security law\u201d and crush the 2019 pro-democracy movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Having watched the battered jalopy of Hong Kong autonomy barely make it out of China\u2019s shady used-car lot before it blew all four tires and burst into flames, the Taiwanese have become highly resistant to the same sales pitch. Indeed, Taiwan wound up <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/5\/20\/taiwan-delays-scheme-to-help-hong-kongers-over-spying-fears\"><span>rethinking<\/span><\/a><span> its offer of refuge to Hong Kong residents fleeing from Beijing\u2019s tyranny because officials in Taipei worried there might be too many Chinese Communist spies and provocateurs mixed in with the refugees.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>The Chinese white paper also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/20220810075107\/https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-08-10\/china-s-first-white-paper-on-taiwan-since-xi-came-to-power-in-full#selection-4009.0-4009.134\"><span>declared<\/span><\/a><span> zero tolerance for \u201cseparatist activities\u201d in Taiwan, and said Beijing \u201cwill not renounce the use of force.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe are ready to create vast space for peaceful reunification, but we will leave no room for separatist activities in any form,\u201d the paper said. \u201cWe will only be forced to take drastic measures to respond to the provocation of separatist elements or external forces should they ever cross our red lines.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The paper menacingly implied those \u201cred lines\u201d are already in danger of breaching, because \u201csome forces in the US are making every effort to incite groups inside Taiwan to stir up trouble and use Taiwan as a pawn against China.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The new paper was also missing a line from the previous two editions that said \u201canything can be negotiated\u201d as long as the Taiwanese do not seek independence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Taiwan\u2019s Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) swiftly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mac.gov.tw\/en\/News_Content.aspx?n=2BA0753CBE348412&#038;sms=E828F60C4AFBAF90&#038;s=9E21789D3A5922A5\"><span>denounced<\/span><\/a><span> Beijing\u2019s new white paper as \u201cfull of wishful thinking, disregard for facts, and lies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>The MAC \u201cforcefully protested\u201d the white paper as disregarding international law in favor of \u201cthe same old pro-unification cliches.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cTaiwan insists that neither side of the Taiwan Strait has jurisdiction over the other and firmly rejects the \u2018one country, two systems\u2019 principle. This is the status quo and the current reality in the Taiwan Strait,\u201d the MAC said.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>The statement condemned the \u201clarge-scale military exercises\u201d China launched in a tantrum after U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan last week as a \u201cprovocative use of force.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cTaiwan has never been part of the People\u2019s Republic of China. Only the 23 million people of Taiwan can decide Taiwan\u2019s future,\u201d the statement declared.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cMainstream public opinion in Taiwan is firmly against the Chinese Communist Party\u2019s saber-rattling to heighten tension in the region,\u201d the MAC <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MAC_Taiwan\/status\/1556901446746259456\"><span>added<\/span><\/a><span> on Twitter. \u201cWe will resolutely defend our nation\u2019s sovereignty and stand with democratic allies to curb the expansion of the authoritarian regime.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>The publication of China\u2019s belligerent white paper came on the same day Andrew Hsia, deputy chair of the more Beijing-friendly Taiwanese opposition party Kuomintang (KMT), was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelnewsasia.com\/asia\/china-white-paper-taiwan-zero-tolerence-separatists-military-drills-2871226\"><span>rebuked<\/span><\/a><span> by the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for visiting China in the middle of Beijing\u2019s outrageous military drills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cNot only is the timing wrong and the stance confused, it\u2019s also letting down the military, which is working hard to defend the country,\u201d the DPP said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Hsia\u2019s travel plans <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.taiwannews.com.tw\/en\/news\/4620971\"><span>leaked<\/span><\/a><span> over the weekend, prompting public outrage over a trip the KMT planned to keep quiet until Hsia was in China. Hsia is a former member of the Taiwanese cabinet but currently has no official status.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The MAC tried to get Hsia to cancel the trip after his itinerary was leaked, but he refused. Hsia denied rumors he would visit Beijing, while KMT <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/focustaiwan.tw\/cross-strait\/202208100013\"><span>claimed<\/span><\/a><span> he was leading an \u201capolitical fact-finding\u201d mission intended to show support for Taiwanese businesses working in China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>KMT said the trip was arranged before Pelosi\u2019s visit and should be viewed as an effort to defuse tensions between Taiwan and China. Some KMT members, including New Taipei Mayor Hou Yu-ih, expressed reservations about Hsia visiting China while the PLA was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taiwannews.com.tw\/en\/news\/4620543\">simulating a blockade<\/a> of the island.
