Last week, the Los Angeles Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/story\/2022-08-03\/gascon-recall-misdirection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published an editorial<\/a> in protest titled, \u201cAnti-Gascon drive extends era of destructive, distracting recall mania.\u201d When addressing the consequences of progressive policies on Americans, the legacy media\u2019s leftist distortion is evident in nearly every line.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The piece begins with the assertion that voters\u2019 desire to remove Gascon has no rational basis. It is instead motivated by \u201canxiety over disease, lockdowns, political turmoil, violence and societal disruption.\u201d Gascon is the victim of emotionally unstable voters who have \u201cpoured their fears\u201d onto him, the editors argue, and this hysteria has been streamlined into a movement by \u201copportunists of various political stripes but most notably from the far right.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That doesn\u2019t exactly fit the description of recall leader Desiree Andrade, a <a href=\"https:\/\/laist.com\/news\/criminal-justice\/recall-campaign-da-gascon-rally-supporters-andrade-sheriff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">registered Democrat<\/a> motivated by the killing of her 20-year-old son, Julian.<\/p>\n<p>Police <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/losangeles\/news\/julian-hamori-andrade-muder-suspects-plead-not-guilty-azusa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">arrested five men in 2018<\/a> who had stabbed Julian, beat him, and thrown him off a cliff. Before Gascon took office, \u201cspecial circumstances\u201d charges of kidnapping and torture would have <a href=\"https:\/\/m.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2021\/may\/9\/desiree-andrade-targets-george-gascon-george-soros\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">boosted<\/a> the attackers\u2019 sentences to life without parole if they were convicted. Gascon removed them, reducing their maximum sentence to 25 years in prison. Disgusted and wounded, Andrade became the co-chair of the recall effort.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In January, the Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2022-01-22\/lopez-column-gascon-balance-criminal-justice-reform-and-public-safety\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spoke to Andrade<\/a> about the \u201chorrific details\u201d of her son\u2019s death. The paper noted that \u201cshe supports criminal justice reforms for low-level crimes, but she thinks Gascon has been soft on those who commit brutal violence.\u201d The editors then had the gall to indirectly suggest that she belongs to a movement of cynical \u201copportunists\u201d with no meaningful cause.<\/p>\n<p>The recent emphasis on criminal reform in leftist politics involves <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/01\/18\/our-country-is-being-destroyed-by-leftists-unwillingness-to-punish-murderers-looters-and-street-poopers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">radical attorneys<\/a> seeking to dismantle \u201coppressive\u201d systems at the local level, which they accomplish by lowering prosecution and rates of incarceration for various crimes, even violent or heinous offenses. This effectively nullifies the law and releases criminals back onto the streets in the name of \u201cequity\u201d and other ideological nonsense.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After a successful campaign for Los Angeles district attorney, thanks in large part to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/10\/07\/george-soros-attempts-to-unseat-l-a-countys-first-black-female-da\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">funding<\/a> from progressive billionaire George Soros, Gascon took office in December 2020 to begin his criminal reform agenda. On his first day in office, he ended most uses of cash bail and eliminated the use of capital punishment in his district. He later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/los-angeles-da-shrinks-gang-unit-while-homicides-and-gang-violence-surge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shrank<\/a> L.A.\u2019s \u201cHardcore Gangs Unit\u201d and illegally <a href=\"https:\/\/katv.com\/news\/nation-world\/los-angeles-da-overstated-his-authority-by-not-following-three-strikes-law-for-felons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">refused to uphold<\/a> California\u2019s \u201cthree strikes\u201d law for repeat offenders. Among the most controversial of his directives was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbclosangeles.com\/investigations\/los-angeles-county-district-attorney-george-gascon-crime-punishment\/2487559\/\">total<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbclosangeles.com\/investigations\/los-angeles-county-district-attorney-george-gascon-crime-punishment\/2487559\/\">ban<\/a> on sentencing enhancements, which he says are \u201cracist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Overall, Gascon\u2019s tenure has been marked by a <a href=\"https:\/\/mynewsla.com\/crime\/2021\/12\/08\/gascon-marks-1-year-in-office-denies-blame-for-crime-spikes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spike in violent crime<\/a> across the county, along with sharp criticism from <a href=\"https:\/\/californiaglobe.com\/articles\/nearly-98-of-los-angeles-prosecutors-vote-to-recall-soros-backed-district-attorney-george-gascon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lawyers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lamag.com\/citythinkblog\/law-enforcement-unions-join-effort-to-recall-george-gascon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">law enforcement<\/a> in the staunchly liberal district. At least 35 cities have <a href=\"https:\/\/adnamerica.com\/en\/california\/35th-california-city-votes-no-confidence-against-los-angeles-district-attorney-george\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">voted \u201cno confidence\u201d<\/a> in Gascon, and voters have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2022-07-09\/715-833-signatures-turned-in-to-recall-los-angeles-county-da-gascon-election-officials-say\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">petitioned<\/a> with more than 700,000 signatures for a recall. If only 566,857 are verified as legitimate, the option to recall him will be on the ballot in November.<\/p>\n<p>Andrade sent a scathing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/letters-to-the-editor\/story\/2022-08-05\/anti-gascon-campaign-response-to-editorial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">response<\/a> to the Times editorial, saying it \u201cgaslights the public\u201d and that the recall is about \u201cGascon\u2019s pro-criminal policies, and nothing else.\u201d As to the claim of \u201cfar-right\u201d influence, Andrade pointed out that many behind the petition were initially supporters of Gascon.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, one L.A. mother who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/la-mother-hit-run-victim-voted-da-gascon-now-supports-recall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">voted for the DA<\/a> now supports the recall due to his handling of a hit-and-run case in which she was involved. In August 2021, an intoxicated 16-year-old driver, out on probation as a felon, plowed into her while she walked her baby in a stroller, knocking her and the stroller over with his car. Multiple videos show the driver veering directly into them, and she later said they made eye contact as she pleaded for him to stop. After the impact, he attempted to flee the scene but was stopped by a truck driver.<\/p>\n<p>The DA\u2019s office <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/los-angeles-da-gascon-sentence-teen-mom-infant-video\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">charged the minor<\/a> with a felony count of leaving the scene of an accident that caused injury without exchanging information and two counts of felony assault, to which he pleaded guilty. Gascon stated, however, that there was \u201cno evidence\u201d of deliberate intent that would support attempted murder or manslaughter charges, and none of his prosecutors were allowed to bring them forward. The teen\u2019s final punishment was a mere five-month sentence in a \u201cjuvenile probation camp\u201d that would \u201crehabilitate\u201d him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI voted for [Gascon] because I believe that our prisons do need some reform,\u201d the outraged mother told Fox News, adding that his level of leniency toward criminals \u201cis very far from any kind of reformation that anybody would think is appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Such views are exactly what the condescending editors of the Los Angeles Times overlook, along with basic concerns for the safety and dignity of law-abiding citizens. They lament that because of the recall effort, Californians might waste time \u201carguing yet again over reforms they have endorsed again and again,\u201d accusing their readers of being shortsighted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In reality, nearly every aspect of the movement against Gascon shows that voters who expected moderate reforms feel betrayed.
