Over the past 48 months, there have been dozens of hit jobs on the terror of \u201cChristian nationalism\u201d; there have been about a score of these smear pieces just this past month alone. <\/p>\n<p>Their Pavlovian function is to condition Americans to associate the term with a bunch of extremists and racists who pose a Hitleresque threat to this country\u2019s democratic institutions so that they will dutifully freak out. These articles rely on the same tactics: straw man arguments that misrepresent both Christianity and nationalism, and phony attempts to depict the movement as white.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChristian Nationalism is an un-Christian concept,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/08\/03\/opinion\/republicans-religious-right-the-argument.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">opines<\/a> the New York Times. The Christian right \u201cis beginning to part with democratic norms,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/07\/01\/1109141110\/the-christian-right-is-winning-cultural-battles-while-public-opinion-disagrees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">laments<\/a> NPR. \u201cChristian nationalism has a long dark history \u2026 of white supremacy, bigotry and ties to the Nazi party,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/opinion\/msnbc-opinion\/why-republicans-christian-nationalism-so-dangerous-n1297527\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">warns<\/a> MSNBC. \u201cThe movement uses Christian language to cloak sexism and hostility to Black people and non-White immigrants in its quest to create a White Christian America,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/07\/24\/us\/white-christian-nationalism-blake-cec\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explains<\/a> CNN.<\/p>\n<p>The trusted media sources who sold you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/02\/19\/politics\/andrew-mccabe-trump-law-enforcement\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Russiagate<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/danielchaitin7\/status\/1377427985150533635?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1377427985150533635%7Ctwgr%5Eff32c64efd142aa941bf2d69b7173f216c3d34ca%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.foxnews.com%2Fmedia%2Fnpr-hunter-biden-laptop-story-discredited-intelligence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hunter Biden laptop Russian disinformation hoax<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2021\/08\/18\/opinion\/inflation-economy-transitory.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201ctransitory\u201d inflation<\/a>, are at least this time right about one thing: Christian nationalism <em>is<\/em> real, and it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/news-and-politics\/2022\/08\/christian-nationalist-identity-marjorie-taylor-greene.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gaining traction<\/a>. It\u2019s biblical, it\u2019s America First, but it\u2019s not \u201cwhite.\u201d It\u2019s not about a white supremacist <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AdamKinzinger\/status\/1542116624328695808?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1542116624328695808%7Ctwgr%5Eec938e5620b0ae256a04ed3860642f4dea729e5d%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thegatewaypundit.com%2F2022%2F06%2Frep-adam-kinzinger-trashes-rep-boebert-calls-christian-taliban%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cChristian Taliban\u201d<\/a> installing a theocracy, idolizing the nation, or in any way rewriting this country\u2019s great Republican constitutional model.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Christian nationalism is entirely consistent with that model. The Declaration of Independence vests the sovereign power with the people, on loan to the government, and entrusts the state with the responsibility of safeguarding the individual\u2019s Creator-endowed rights. In asserting that \u201cthe United Colonies are and ought to be Free and Independent States,\u201d the signers appealed to the \u201cSupreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of [their] intentions\u201d and committed themselves to \u201cthe protection of Divine Providence.\u201d If nationalists believe that government should prioritize the interests of the country and the people, <em>Christian <\/em>nationalists believe, as did the Founders, they should do so under the banner of God.<\/p>\n<p>The United States isn\u2019t special because it\u2019s a nation chosen by God; it\u2019s special because it\u2019s a nation that <em>chose<\/em> God. The implications are entirely biblical. Holy Scripture invites individuals from every race, tribe, nation, and language to freely enter into a personal relationship with the Savior, to live by His commandments, and worship Him as King. <\/p>\n<p>It also envisages, from Genesis to Isaiah, from the Gospels to the Book of Revelation, the conversion of whole nations or peoples, and warns of the inevitable harm of instead embracing a culture of idolatry, depravity, and deceit. Hence, we read in Proverbs that \u201ca nation without God\u2019s guidance is a nation without order.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The biblical message of rightly ordered praise, an objective standard of morality, and free will is a steadying hand, tempering the self-interest of nationalism and the reactionary tendencies of its close cousin populism. When, on the other hand, generic nationalism is shaped by the coercive and unobstructed power of a godless, behemoth administrative state, grave problems arise.<\/p>\n<p>This was the story of early 20th-century Germany. Hitler was not a <em>Christian <\/em>nationalist but an illiberal, anti-capitalist, anti-religious national <em>socialist<\/em>. Hitler\u2019s New Order was the culmination of a decades-long counter-Renaissance revolution in Germany. The enemy \u2014 one they shared with communists \u2014 was the essence of Western civilization: liberal democracy, the individual man <em>qua<\/em> man, and the majesty of God.<\/p>\n<p>In his 1944 book \u201cRoad to Serfdom,\u201d the Viennese Nobel Prize-winner Friedrich von Hayek warned not to repeat Germany\u2019s fate by implementing the same policies of big government, central planning, collectivism, social engineering, and the subjugation of the individual to the will of the omnipotent state. Hayek\u2019s concern was not Hitler\u2019s nationalism per se, but his socialism.<\/p>\n<p>Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Walter Lippman similarly warned about the \u201ccult of the Providential state.\u201d He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/1936\/11\/the-government-of-posterity\/652211\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> that a generation no longer looking confidently to God for the regulation of human affairs is now realizing what happens \u201cwhen men retreat from freedom to a coercive organization of their affairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today, Americans are reaching the same conclusion, with evidence indicating a <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/2022-midterm-elections-biden-covid-health-presidential-e50db07385831e67f866ec45402be8b9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">collapse in support<\/a> for the Democrats\u2019 socialist, America-last agenda. Economically, Americans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/poll-biden-more-blame-trump-over-ukraine-majority-favors-drilling-combat-rising-gas-prices-1685329\">recognize<\/a> that the manipulation of the energy sector in the name of the bogus Green New Deal is driving up gas prices. They\u2019re also <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/07\/13\/americans-say-biden-policies-hurt-economy-as-inflation-tops-9\/\">blaming<\/a> Biden\u2019s economic mismanagement for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/economy\/u-s-inflation-at-9-1-percent-a-record-high\">record high inflation<\/a>, a crisis the administration is now exploiting to expand the IRS by more than six times its current annual budget. Voters are losing interest in spending billions to protect Ukraine\u2019s sovereignty when the U.S.\u2019s own southern border is being overrun by <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/06\/29\/human-traffickers-at-border-are-experts-at-disguising-vehicles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">human<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cis.org\/Arthur\/Border-Disaster-Offers-Opportunities-Drug-Traffickers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">drug traffickers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/townhall.com\/tipsheet\/katiepavlich\/2022\/03\/08\/criminals-with-horrific-records-are-still-pouring-across-the-border-n2604224\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sex offenders, and violent criminals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Socially, Americans are trending toward family policies that reflect a conservative, Judeo-Christian<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblaze.com\/fearless\/oped\/squires-john-adams-us-constitution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">worldview<\/a>: honoring the nuclear family and parental rights, ensuring medical freedom, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2022\/1557\/BillText\/er\/PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fiercely protecting the innocence of children<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As much as the left fetishizes skin color, none of this is about race, although different racial groups are feeling the pain in various ways. The Biden administration\u2019s war on fossil fuels is affecting both the Native Americans whose resource-rich tribal lands bring wealth and employment to Native communities, and the predominately white Americans employed in mining, oil, and gas extraction.<\/p>\n<p>Hispanics, more than any other ethnic or racial group, want the southern border <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrafalgargroup.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/COSA-Border-Full-Report-0428.pdf\">closed<\/a> and are registering their disapproval by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TexasGOP\/status\/1536897217323204609?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1536897217323204609%7Ctwgr%5Ed2d081e98f5f62c7470af2d3aa27aaf966137ef3%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fthehayride.com%2F2022%2F06%2Frepublican-flores-flips-84-hispanic-rio-grande-valley-congressional-seat-in-special-election%2F\">flipping<\/a> former Democrat strongholds on the southern border red. And with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/in-depth\/news\/nation\/2020\/02\/24\/latino-small-business-owners-becoming-economic-force-us\/4748786002\/\">exponential<\/a> increase in business ownership to approximately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/library\/visualizations\/2016\/comm\/hispanic-businesses.html\">12 percent<\/a> of the 27.6 million total U.S. businesses, they\u2019re understandably <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/07\/20\/joe-biden-polling-hispanics-quinnipiac\/\">not impressed<\/a> by Biden\u2019s economic performance, an assessment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/politics\/as-midterms-near-new-poll-portends-trouble-for-biden-democrats-among-black-voters-worried-about-economy\/ar-AA103Xu7\">60 percent of black voters<\/a> agree with. Parents across all racial groups <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2020\/02\/24\/voters-strongly-support-school-choice-educators-should-listen-column\/4831964002\/\">overwhelmingly favor<\/a> initiatives such as school vouchers and education savings accounts. <\/p>\n<p>Not surprisingly then, elections in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/republican-mark-robinson-becomes-ncs-first-black-lt-governor-after-giving-impassioned-pro-gun-speech\">North Carolina<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.cbn.com\/cbnnews\/politics\/2021\/november\/thank-you-jesus-winsome-sears-focuses-on-faith-after-making-history-as-virginias-first-black-female-lieutenant-governor\">Virginia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/05\/17\/politics\/doug-mastriano-pennsylvania-republican-governor-primary\/index.html\">Pennsylvania<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/07\/06\/dan-cox-democrats-kelly-schulz-maryland-governor-primary\/\">Maryland<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/08\/04\/trump-endorsed-candidate-kari-lake-wins-gop-arizona-gubernatorial-primary\/\">Arizona<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/08\/03\/rep-peter-meijer-beaten-by-far-right-challenger-john-gibbs\/\">Michigan<\/a>, reveal a gravitation toward populist candidates united not by their race or gender but by their Christian, America First principles. The message is one of decency, not degeneracy, prosperity, not pauperdom, and self-determination, not serfdom. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s this love of God, country, and freedom trifecta that has the enemy screeching like there\u2019s no tomorrow. But it\u2019s a winning formula, and the establishment fears it, which is why its hordes in the press keep militantly pounding away at those racist white supremacists every chance they get.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Carina Benton is a dual citizen of Australia and Italy and a permanent resident of the United States.
