Governor John Fetterman, the commonwealth\u2019s Democratic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/2022-midterms\">nominee<\/a> for the Senate campaigning against Republican rival <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/dr-oz\">Dr. Mehmet Oz<\/a>, was hospitalized on May 13 \u2014 days before the primary election \u2014 and has been recovering in the wake of receiving a pacemaker-defibrillator. Though he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/hell-be-fine-pa-democratic-senate-nominee-cleared-by-doctor-to-campaign-after-suffering-a-stroke-days-before-primary\">cleared<\/a> by his cardiologist to campaign in the midterm elections, Fetterman made no significant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/pennsylvania-democrat-john-fetterman-to-end-absence-from-campaign-trail-two-months-after-stroke\">public appearances<\/a> until the end of last month.<\/p>\n<p>Fetterman has instead focused on various social media trolling campaigns against Oz, most of which draw attention to the celebrity cardiologist\u2019s longtime residence in New Jersey \u2014 for example, by posting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/07\/15\/entertainment\/snooki-cameo-dr-oz-john-fetterman-cec\/index.html\">cameo<\/a> from Snooki, a personality from the reality show \u201cJersey Shore,\u201d and attempting to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/john-fetterman-petition-dr-oz-new-jersey-hall-of-fame-2022-7\">induct<\/a> Oz into the New Jersey Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n<p>The memes, however, have been slung in the other direction as well. Following a report indicating that Fetterman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/pennsylvania-senate-nominee-fettermans-parents-gave-him-allowance-as-high-as-five-figures-well-into-his-40s\">received<\/a> five-figure allowances from his parents during his tenure as the mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania, the Oz campaign launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/fraudsterfetterman.com\/\">promotional website<\/a> called \u201cBasement Bum Fetterman\u201d \u2014 complete with an image depicting the candidate as shirtless and overweight, as well as a clarification that the page was \u201cNot Paid For By John Fetterman\u2019s Daddy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pennsylvania\u2019s voters, according to polls, appear to be favoring Fetterman thus far, with <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.fivethirtyeight.com\/polls\/senate\/2022\/pennsylvania\/\">FiveThirtyEight<\/a> showing the Democrat with a 10.8% lead as of August 4. One recent SurveyMonkey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc27.com\/pennsylvania-senate-race\/pennsylvania-senate-race-fetterman-leads-oz-in-new-poll\/\">poll<\/a> indicated that Fetterman and Oz respectively have 19% and 38% unfavorability ratings, with Fetterman receiving 17% of his support from voters who favored former President Donald Trump in the 2020 election.<\/p>\n<p>The national political equation may be working against Fetterman. One USA Today Network and Suffolk University <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/early-midterm-poll-has-dire-news-for-pennsylvania-republicans\">poll<\/a> showed in June that Pennsylvanians disapprove of President Joe Biden by a 54% to 39% margin, with more than half of the electorate saying that they \u201cwant their vote in November to change the direction in which Biden is leading the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoters say they are unhappy with the economy in Pennsylvania and President Biden\u2019s job approval, yet these particular Democrats are threading the needle thus far,\u201d according to Suffolk University Political Research Center Director David Paleologos.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, 48% of Pennsylvanians said that their standard of living is worse, while 17% said it is better \u2014 a significant reversal from 31% reporting better conditions and 17% reporting worse in 2018. In Pennsylvania, gasoline costs an average of $4.34 per gallon, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/\">AAA<\/a>. When President Biden took office, the national average cost of gas was $2.39 per gallon.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, Fetterman is \u201cslightly favored\u201d to win the election, with FiveThirtyEight\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.fivethirtyeight.com\/2022-election-forecast\/senate\/pennsylvania\/\">predictive model<\/a> giving the candidate 67% odds.<\/p>\n<p>Fetterman gave his first media interview since May to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.post-gazette.com\/news\/politics-state\/2022\/07\/20\/john-fetterman-health-update-stroke-condition-us-senate-campaign-democratic-candidate-dr-mehmet-oz\/stories\/202207200082\">Pittsburgh Post-Gazette<\/a> last month \u2014 emphasizing that although he may \u201cmiss a word\u201d or \u201cslur two together\u201d from time to time, he\u2019s \u201cfeeling really good\u201d and has \u201cnothing to hide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would never be in this if we were not absolutely, 100% able to run fully and to win \u2014 and we believe that we are,\u201d Fetterman said.<\/p>\n<p>Both candidates are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/oz-fetterman-fill-their-war-chests-for-key-senate-race\">filling their war chests<\/a> for one of the nation\u2019s most contentious midterm races. Oz has raised more than $19 million between March 17, 2021, and June 30, 2022, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/data\/candidate\/S2PA00638\/?tab=raising#total-receipts\">filings<\/a> with the U.S. Federal Elections Commission.
