More than half will go to \u201cenforcement-related\u201d efforts, which includes hiring special agents, who the agency\u2019s job description <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/washington-secrets\/irs-seeks-armed-accountants-ready-for-deadly-force\">says<\/a> will \u201ccarry a firearm and be willing to use deadly force, if necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a Special Agent you will combine your accounting skills with law enforcement skills to investigate financial crimes,\u201d the description states. \u201cSpecial Agents are duly sworn law enforcement officers who are trained to \u2018follow the money.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to carrying guns and badges, investigators in the IRS Criminal Investigation branch will be outfitted with all the trappings of police officers. Other\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/irm\/part9\/irm_09-011-003\">investigative equipment<\/a>\u00a0at their disposal includes fleet and surveillance vehicles, radio communication equipment, body armor, electronic surveillance equipment, audio and video equipment, cameras and lenses, night vision equipment, optical equipment, funds for confidential informants, and something called \u201cpadded training suits.\u201d\u00a0The IRS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verifythis.com\/article\/news\/verify\/government-verify\/internal-revenue-service-did-buy-nearly-700k-in-ammunition\/536-0ce9f538-a372-4c26-8013-1ab4e571578c#:~:text=On%20July%201%2C%20Congressman%20Matt,of%20dollars%20worth%20of%20ammunition.\">bought $700,000 in ammunition<\/a> earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>The new hires won\u2019t be picked on their merits alone, according to the agency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCriminal Investigation Special Agents are part of a diverse workforce that mirrors the taxpaying public we serve,\u201d the IRS vowed.<\/p>\n<p>IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig told the Senate in an August 4 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-utl\/commissioners-letter-to-the-senate.pdf\">letter<\/a>\u00a0that the agency\u2019s massive expansion should not scare the middle class.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese resources are absolutely not about increasing audit scrutiny on small businesses or middle-income Americans,\u201d Rettig wrote. \u201cAs we\u2019ve been planning, our investment of these enforcement resources is designed around the Department of the Treasury\u2019s directive that audit rates will not rise relative to recent years for households making under $400,000.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Observers are skeptical.<\/p>\n<p>Nonpartisan watchdog Joint Committee on Taxation estimates that as much as <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/08\/03\/why-irs-80b-expansion-is-a-nightmare-for-small-business\/\">90% of the estimated $200 billion<\/a>\u00a0in additional funds the IRS will collect as a result of beefing up its ranks\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/07\/31\/senate-gop-argues-data-shows-schumer-manchin-deal-raises-taxes-on-earners-under-400k\/\">will come from small businesses.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe IRS will have to target small and medium businesses because they won\u2019t fight back,\u201d Joe Hinchman, executive vice president at National Taxpayers Union Foundation, told the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/08\/10\/irs-audits-will-absolutely-not-target-middle-income-americans\/\">New York Post<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen this play out before \u2026 the IRS says \u2018We\u2019re going after the rich\u2019 but when you\u2019re trying to raise that much money, the rich can only get you so far.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe approach here is to double the IRS workforce, take the leash off, and see how much they can collect,\u201d Hinchman added.<\/p>\n<p>Rettig\u2019s letter to lawmakers about the aggressive growth plan included\u00a0a potentially ominous sentence, at least for anyone who has ever been audited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cannot be forceful enough in emphasizing that these resources will be transformative for the agency and for American taxpayers,\u201d Rettig wrote.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The IRS is about to go on an 87,000-employee hiring spree and many of those new tax collectors will be packing heat\u00a0while they hunt for money.
