The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publichealth.va.gov\/exposures\/burnpits\/\">believes<\/a> that burn pits, which were often used to burn waste and trash during military operations in places like Iraq and Afghanistan, have since sparked a host of health issues for veterans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have many obligations and only one truly sacred obligation: To equip those we send into harm\u2019s way and to care for them and their families when they come home,\u201d Biden said during Wednesday\u2019s bill signing ceremony. \u201cI was going to get this done come hell or high water,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The president also mentioned his son, Beau Biden, an Iraq War veteran who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/05\/31\/us\/politics\/joseph-r-biden-iii-vice-presidents-son-beau-dies-at-46.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">died<\/a> in 2015 at the age of 46 after being diagnosed with brain cancer. Biden has previously hinted that he believes his son\u2019s cancer was related to the burn pits, though he noted during his State of the Union address that \u201cwe don\u2019t know for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToxic smoke, thick with poison spreading\u00a0through the air and into the\u00a0lungs of our troops,\u201d Biden said Wednesday. \u201cWhen they came home many of the\u00a0fittest and best warriors that\u00a0we sent to war were not the\u00a0same.\u00a0Headaches, numbness, dizziness,\u00a0cancer. My son Beau was one of\u00a0them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new law\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/08\/10\/fact-sheet-president-biden-signs-the-pact-act-and-delivers-on-his-promise-to-americas-veterans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">expands<\/a> access to both health care and disability benefits for veterans suffering from issues relating to burn pits exposure, Biden explained.
