He argued that the resources would be devoted to \u201clarge corporate and global high-net-worth taxpayers\u201d while serving as an aide to typical filers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese resources are absolutely not about increasing audit scrutiny on small businesses or middle-income Americans,\u201d he wrote. \u201cOther resources will be invested in employees and IT systems that will allow us to better serve all taxpayers, including small businesses and middle-income taxpayers. Enhanced IT systems and taxpayer service will actually mean that honest taxpayers will be better able to comply with the tax laws, resulting in a lower likelihood of being audited and a reduced burden on them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The IRS employed nearly 79,000 full-time employees as of fiscal year 2021, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/statistics\/irs-budget-and-workforce\">agency<\/a>, which also reported $13.7 billion in operating costs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs an extremely proud American, I\u2019m grateful for your support of the IRS and our dedicated employees,\u201d Rettig added. \u201cI cannot be forceful enough in emphasizing that these resources will be transformative for the agency and for American taxpayers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several Republican lawmakers have blasted the new proposal as an affront to the American taxpayer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t believe it when I read it,\u201d Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/god-help-us-lindsey-graham-blasts-plan-to-add-87000-new-irs-agents-vows-to-redirect-funding-to-the-border\">said<\/a> at a press conference, noting that some of his state\u2019s college football stadiums would be unable to contain the 87,000 new employees. \u201cThey\u2019re talking about expanding the IRS two and a half times\u2026 So when you go to the football games this fall, just imagine everybody to your left and right being IRS agents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are a lot of bad things in this bill, but few are worse than the proposal by Democrats in this bill to double the size of the IRS and create 87,000 new IRS agents,\u201d Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/ted-cruz-dems-want-to-make-the-irs-larger-than-the-pentagon-the-state-dept-the-fbi-and-the-border-patrol-combined\">argued<\/a> during a speech on the Senate floor. \u201cI guarantee you citizens in every one of our states, if you ask them, \u2018What do they want?\u2019 they don\u2019t want 87,000 new IRS agents. And they\u2019re not being created to audit billionaires or giant corporations. They\u2019re being created to audit you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbo.gov\/publication\/57444\">Congressional Budget Office<\/a> concluded from an earlier proposal to hire 87,000 new IRS agents that audit rates \u201cwould rise for all taxpayers,\u201d even as higher-income taxpayers \u201cface the largest increase.\u201d According to Republican members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/gop-waysandmeans.house.gov\/americans-chances-of-audit-more-than-doubles-as-newly-supercharged-irs-targets-lower-middle-income-earners\/\">House Ways and Means Committee<\/a>, the new agents would be capable of carrying out 1.2 million more individual audits per year, with nearly half impacting Americans earning less than $75,000.<\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden has likewise argued that the Inflation Reduction Act would \u201cmake the largest corporations pay their fair share without any new taxes on people making under $400,000 a year.\u201d Yet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/biden-claims-legislative-deal-on-his-agenda-wont-raise-taxes-on-people-making-less-than-400k-report-says-otherwise\">data<\/a> from the nonpartisan Joint Committee on Taxation indicated last month that the new legislation would increase taxes on every income category except for those earning between $10,000 and $30,000.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner Charles Rettig vowed in a recent letter that the agency would \u201cabsolutely not\u201d use the 87,000 new employees funded by the Inflation Reduction Act to target middle-class Americans.
