Version: 4.0.47--><div><\/div>\n<p><em>By Adam Andrzejewski for RealClearPolicy<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Even though there were many warning signs that the drinking water in Illinois is tainted with \u201cforever chemicals\u201d that can stay in a person\u2019s body for years and cause cancer and other diseases, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency didn\u2019t begin testing the state\u2019s water utilities for the chemicals until August 2020.<\/p>\n<p>This is according to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/environment\/ct-pfas-illinois-drinking-water-20220710-lcql5pgfjjcqrm2libb3gej5ty-htmlstory.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new investigation by the Chicago Tribune<\/a>, which reported that even after finding out the results, state and local officials downplayed them, \u201cburying notices filled with technical jargon on government websites.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/pfas\/pfas-explained\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">known as PFAS<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 are long lasting chemicals found in many different consumer, commercial, and industrial products that break down very slowly over time.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Congress allocated $10 billion for loans and grants to finance PFAS-related projects, and the EPA\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/infrastructure\/fact-sheet-epa-bipartisan-infrastructure-law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently received $50 billion<\/a>\u00a0for drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure projects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/thepoliticalinsider.com\/illinois-governor-invested-in-company-with-2-6-billion-in-state-contracts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Illinois Governor Invested in Company With $2.6 Billion In State Contracts<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Illinois, more than 8 million people in the state \u2014 6 out of every 10 Illinoisans \u2014 get their drinking water from a utility where at least one \u201cforever chemical\u201d has been detected, according to the Chicago Tribune investigation.<\/p>\n<p>As state officials downplayed the significance of the chemicals in drinking water, municipalities took it upon themselves to fix it.<\/p>\n<div id=\"subscribe\" class=\"email-signup inarticle\">\n<h4>Support Conservative Voices!<\/h4>\n<h5><strong>Sign up to receive the latest<\/strong> political news, insight, and commentary delivered directly to your inbox.<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<p>Several municipal wells in Will County are contaminated with PFAS and five communities there \u2014 Channahon, Crest Hill, Joliet, Romeoville and Shorewood \u2014 are forming a new water authority and building a 31-mile pipeline to transport treated Lake Michigan water sold by Chicago, the newspaper reported.<\/p>\n<p>The project is slated for completion in 2030, costing water ratepayers at least $1.4 billion, to ensure residents and businesses they have enough safe water to drink.<\/p>\n<p>State officials didn\u2019t do their jobs and now residents must pay for it, to the tune of $1.4 billion.
