R. Martin\u2019s universe by exploring \u201cinternalized misogyny,\u201d the \u201cpatriarchy,\u201d \u00a0and other feminist tropes.<\/p>\n<p>The new series follows the relationship between two women \u2014\u00a0Alicent Hightower and Rhaenyra Targaryen \u2014 who are close friends as children but who become adversaries as adults.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2022\/08\/house-of-the-dragon-milly-emily-interview-1234748701\/\">interview<\/a> with Indiewire, one of the stars\u00a0explained the show\u2019s feminist spin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>House of the Dragon<\/em> really creates a nuanced conversation of misogyny,\u201d actress Milly Alcock told Indiewire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t only explore it through a level of women being shut down and the patriarchy, but also go in-depth about the internalized misogyny that women are constantly faced with, and the competitiveness. Alicent and Rhaenyra\u2019s relationship is at the forefront of that conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n[embedded content]\n<p>Her comments come after a <a href=\"https:\/\/jezebel.com\/has-the-game-of-thrones-franchise-learned-anything-ab-1849327784\">media-concocted backlash<\/a> against<em> Game of Thrones,\u00a0<\/em>which\u00a0sought to portray the hit series and George R.R. Martin himself as sexist because of the series\u2019 rape scenes.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the creative team behind <em>House of the Dragon<\/em>\u00a0has been working hard to re-assure journalists that they will not commit the same sin.<\/p>\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2022\/08\/house-of-the-dragon-sexual-violence-game-of-thrones\">interview<\/a> with <em>Vanity Fair<\/em>, <em>House of the Dragon\u00a0<\/em>executive producer Sara Hess said sexual violence will never be shown on-screen, though it does occur off-screen,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think what our show does, and what I\u2019m proud of, is that we choose to focus on the violence against women that is inherent in a patriarchal system,\u201d she told the magazine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe handle one instance off-screen, and instead show the aftermath and impact on the victim and the mother of the perpetrator.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Follow David Ng on Twitter\u00a0<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HeyItsDavidNg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">@HeyItsDavidNg<\/a>.
