Betty McCollum (D-Minn.) prevailed over community organizer Amane Badhasso, a refugee from Ethiopia, in Minnesota\u2019s 4th Congressional District Democratic primary.<\/p>\n<p>McCollum, 68, is the longest-serving member of Minnesota\u2019s congressional delegation.<\/p>\n<p>With 26 percent of the votes counted at 11 p.m. ET, McCollum drew 84 percent of the vote to Badhasso\u2019s 14percent.<\/p>\n<p>Badhasso is a progressive Democrat who hoped to join Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) and Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) on the \u201csquad\u201d in Congress.<\/p>\n<p>Tlaib and Bush won their respective Democratic primaries last week.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement after she announced her candidacy, Badhasso explained why she entered the race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am running for Congress because we need a new generation of progressive Democrats,\u201d Badhasso said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are not addressing the issue of the climate catastrophe. They\u2019re not addressing the issue of income inequality. They\u2019re not addressing the issue of systemic racism in this country,\u201d Badhasso added. \u201cAnd what we need is somebody that\u2019s accountable to the folks in the district.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>First elected in 2001, McCollum is a friend to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and chairs an appropriations subcommittee\u00a0that authors the Pentagon\u2019s annual budget.<\/p>\n<p>Badhasso said that McCollum is not progressive enough.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in her campaign, Badhasso told reporters that\u00a0\u201cwe need leaders who are more empathetic, who aren\u2019t beholden to special interests, who will fight for folks here and folks abroad. We need a dramatic change in leadership across the board.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCollum defended her track record of more than 21 years in Congress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExperience matters,\u201d McCollum told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. \u201cYou want a doctor with experience, you want a car mechanic with experience, you want a plumber who knows what they\u2019re doing.
