Activists screamed at the council members and the police before the police declared the meeting an unlawful assembly.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Dispersal order was given and everyone has cleared the City Council chambers. Use this toolkit <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5OX0o1hIbO\">https:\/\/t.co\/5OX0o1hIbO<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/i0S4gja0fH\">pic.twitter.com\/i0S4gja0fH<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Services Not Sweeps (@NoSweepsLA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NoSweepsLA\/status\/1557068713756487680?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 9, 2022<\/a> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">The scene unfolded during the public comment period for the city council\u2019s effort to ban people from sleeping, lying on or storing property within 500 feet of all public and private schools and day care centers, according to the LA Times. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/07\/25\/los-angeles-squanders-thousands-of-housing-vouchers-homeless-population-death-skyrockets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles<\/a> already bans this for some schools, and the city council voted in favor last week but had to move to a second vote because it was not unanimous.<\/p>\n<p>Protesters portrayed the move as hostile to <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/02\/12\/los-angeles-california-hiding-homeless-super-bowl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">homeless<\/a> people and urged the city council to repeal the existing city law banning sleeping and storing property around certain schools. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/31\/rep-maxine-waters-homeless-go-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Rep. Maxine Waters Tells Homeless People To \u2018Go Home\u2019)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Various photos and videos shared online show the room packed with protesters, some of them holding signs and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NoSweepsLA\/status\/1557062729927520256\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">chanting<\/a> \u201chouse keys not handcuffs\u201d while at least eight police officers, some of whom had partial face shields, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AazamiShervin\/status\/1557063085696901120\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gathered<\/a> in front of the council members.<\/p>\n<p>Council President Nury Martinez said the events brought the city \u201cone step closer\u201d to the Capitol riots of Jan. 6, 2021, according to the LA Times. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/03\/video-shows-attack-surge-violence-la-homeless\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Video Shows Latest Attack In Surge Of Violence Against LA Homeless)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe cannot legislate in fear,\u201d she told the outlet. \u201cI certainly won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The police declared the meeting an unlawful assembly, and the city council reconvened later in the morning and <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7.com\/homeless-encampments-schools-los-angeles-city-council\/12112640\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">passed<\/a> the measure.<\/p>\n<p>Services Not Sweeps and the Los Angeles Police Department did not respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
