Now that the party in power has spent a year and a half conducting show trials to disparage the entire Republican Party over a riot that happened on Jan. 6, 2021, and has brazenly escalated its persecution of Republicans, conducting surprise raids against people like Trump DOJ official Jeffrey Clark and now the former president himself, silence or even approval from Democrats shows their contemptuous dishonesty. Here are four examples of leftists decrying the threat of prosecution against political opponents, while they tacitly endorse the Biden Justice Department\u2019s attempt to hamstring Trump\u2019s opportunity for re-election.<\/p>\n<p>In a New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/06\/24\/opinion\/trump-jan-6-prosecution.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">guest essay<\/a> in June, Richard L. Hasen wrote that \u201c\u2018Lock her up!\u2019 chants against Hillary Clinton at 2016 Trump rallies for her use of a personal email server while she was secretary of state were so pernicious because threatening to jail political enemies can lead to a deterioration of democratic values.\u201d In a piece dedicated to arguing for the prosecution of former President Trump \u2014 a far more serious step than chants at a rally \u2014 he admitted, \u201cIf each presidential administration is investigating and prosecuting the last, respect for both the electoral process and the legal process may be undermined.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/02\/27\/briefing\/putin-democracy-ukraine.html?searchResultPosition=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">article<\/a> in February, German Lopez criticized authoritarian regimes for jailing opponents to interfere with elections. \u201cAuthoritarians have also abandoned pretenses of democratic norms,\u201d Lopez wrote. \u201cPutin, as well as rulers in Nicaragua, Venezuela and elsewhere, once tried to at least maintain the appearance of free and fair elections. But now they regularly jail political opponents, denying the opposition the ability to campaign.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Dave Aronberg, a Florida state attorney and former Democrat state legislator, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WC74hvyPjO0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> on MSNBC in October 2020 that Trump was \u201cgoing into that tyrant mode\u201d by calling for his opponents to be arrested. \u201cIt\u2019s actually pretty common in countries that have dictators to jail their political opponents,\u201d he said. \u201cRemember, he has an affinity for Erdogan in Turkey. \u2026 In Russia, Vladimir Putin does it all the time. Kim Jong-Un jails them and kills them.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>On CNN last June, Democrat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi herself <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/06\/13\/politics\/nancy-pelosi-trump-doj-data-seizure-cnntv\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">criticized<\/a> the Trump Justice Department over allegations that prosecutors \u201csubpoenaed Apple for data from the accounts of House Intelligence Committee Democrats along with their staff and family members as part of a leak investigation.\u201d Pelosi said that this went \u201ceven beyond Richard Nixon.\u201d Regarding claims that Attorneys General Jeff Sessions and Bill Barr at the time did not know about the investigations, she said that was \u201cbeyond belief\u201d and \u201canother manifestation of [the Trump Justice Department\u2019s] rogue activity.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is just out of the question,\u201d Pelosi said, painting the leak investigation as \u201cundermining the rule of law.\u201d \u201cNo matter who\u2019s president, whatever party, this cannot be the way it goes.\u201d <\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Olivia Hajicek is an intern at The Federalist and a junior at Hillsdale College studying history and journalism.
