Steven Horsford, who has demanded wealthy people pay more in taxes, was fined after not paying thousands in property taxes on time in connection to his million dollar home, state records show.<\/p>\n<p>Horsford <a href=\"https:\/\/thenevadaglobe.com\/congress\/on-tax-day-rep-horsford-says-system-is-rigged-for-wealthy\/\">said<\/a> in an April press conference that the \u201ccurrent federal tax code is rigged for the wealthy against the worker,\u201d noting, \u201cIt\u2019s only fair that the wealthy pay their fair share.\u201d However, Horsford did not pay more than $13,800 combined in taxes in a timely manner on his residence in Arlington, Virginia, owed during a two year period, <a href=\"https:\/\/propertysearch.arlingtonva.us\/Home\/TaxBalances?lrsn=55964\">according<\/a> to public tax records reviewed by the Daily Caller News Foundation. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/07\/28\/dem-spending-bill-shell-80-billion-supersize-irs\/\"><strong>(Democrats Plan To Shell Out Almost $80 Billion To Supersize The IRS)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Horsford, who as a member of Congress <a href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.gov\/artandhistory\/history\/common\/briefing\/senate_salaries.htm\">earns<\/a> a salary of $174,000 per year and assumed office in 2019, was hit with over $2,500 in penalties, interest and fines between 2015 and 2016 for the late payments, records show. The home is valued at over $1.5 million and was purchased in September 2015, according to public records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst, when Mr. Horsford purchased this property, he was not in Congress,\u201d a spokesman for Horsford told the DCNF. \u201cSecond, the property taxes were paid after a mortgage processing error was identified. Third, Congressman Horsford pays his taxes and continues to advocate for policies that level the playing field and will make sure the richest 1% pay theirs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Horsford\u2019s office did not provide corresponding documents verifying whether or not there was a mortgage processing error. The Arlington County Treasurer\u2019s office confirmed to the DCNF the taxes were paid late.<\/p>\n<p>Horsford paid a first installment on his 2015 taxes roughly five months late, on April 22, 2016, and a second installment six months late, on June 28, 2016, according to the treasurer\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>The congressman paid a first installment on his 2016 taxes roughly four months late, on Oct. 18, 2016, according to the treasurers office. (Photo by Chip Somodevilla\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Horsford notably <a href=\"https:\/\/horsford.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/congressman-horsford-votes-to-pass-the-build-back-better-act-and-create-a-stronger-healthier-and-safer-future-for-nevada\">voted<\/a> in favor of the Democrat-led Build Back Better Act in November 2021, which did not pass and would have raised taxes for Americans of all income levels, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finance.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/jct_distributional_analysis.pdf\">analysis<\/a> by the nonpartisan Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation.<\/p>\n<p>Horsford has also <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepHorsford\/status\/1556446844170944513\">supported<\/a> the Democrat-led $740 billion \u201cInflation Reduction Act\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/08\/07\/senate-democrats-pass-740-billion-climate-healthcare-reconciliation-package-inflation-reduction-act\/\">spending<\/a> package \u2014 which cleared the Senate Sunday and heads to the House for a vote after recess ends on Aug. 12.<\/p>\n<p>The bill will raise taxes from 20.3% to 20.6% in 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finance.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/jct_distributional_effects_inflation_reduction_act.pdf\">according<\/a> to the Joint Committee on Taxation, and by $10.8 billion in 2023 for people who earn between $100,000 and $200,000.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile ordinary Nevadans have faced economic hardship due to the pandemic, billionaires have profited tremendously,\u201d Horsford also <a href=\"https:\/\/battlebornprogress.org\/tax-day-2022-billionaires-report\/\">said<\/a> in April. \u201cWe must ensure the wealthiest pay their fair share and bring benefits for all Nevadans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
