Four years later, Garland oversaw a raid on the former president\u2019s personal home. <\/p>\n<p>The Department of Justice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/08\/08\/1116427430\/trump-says-fbi-agents-raided-his-mar-a-lago-home-in-florida\">refused<\/a> to confirm that Attorney General Garland had personally signed off on Monday\u2019s raid on Mar-a-Lago, Trump\u2019s Palm Beach home, but it seems impossible that such an outrageous move could be made without approval from the top. Since Garland hasn\u2019t fired every agent involved and proclaimed their disgrace from the rooftops, it\u2019s safe to assume the raid had Garland\u2019s blessing \u2014 in which case, it was one of the most glaring acts of political revenge in recent memory. How can anyone be expected to believe Garland is acting as a neutral arbiter of justice here?<\/p>\n<p>When Garland was nominated to the Supreme Court in 2016, the last year of Barack Obama\u2019s presidency and an election year, Senate Republicans stalled his confirmation with the express approval of then-candidate Trump. \u201cI think the next president should make the pick, and I think they shouldn\u2019t go forward, and I believe I\u2019m pretty much in line with what the Republicans are saying,\u201d Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.nytimes.com\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/obama-supreme-court-nomination\/donald-trump-rejects-garland-nomination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a>, even before Garland was officially nominated. While Garland\u2019s nomination still dangled, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/05\/19\/us\/politics\/donald-trump-supreme-court-nominees.html\">released<\/a> his own list of originalist judges he would potentially nominate if elected. And after assuming office, when Trump nominated now-Justice Neil Gorsuch to fill the seat that was denied to Garland, he <a href=\"https:\/\/trumpwhitehouse.archives.gov\/briefings-statements\/remarks-president-trump-justice-gorsuch-swearing-justice-gorsuch-supreme-court\/\">thanked<\/a> Sen. Mitch McConnell for spiking Garland\u2019s confirmation to \u201cmake this achievement possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How did Garland take the snub? Garland\u2019s friend and colleague Judge Laurence Silberman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/style\/merrick-garland-supreme-court-nomination\/2020\/10\/06\/7098085a-0719-11eb-9be6-cf25fb429f1a_story.html\">said<\/a> Garland had \u201calways regarded the role of a judge as a culmination of his profession.\u201d It\u2019s easy to extrapolate that Garland would view a seat on the Supreme Court bench as the ultimate culmination of his career. Silberman added that \u201cHe certainly was disappointed and thought it was unfair,\u201d and that \u201cI tried to convince him it wasn\u2019t personal.\u201d Silberman didn\u2019t say whether that attempt was successful.<\/p>\n<p>Garland\u2019s weaponization of federal law enforcement isn\u2019t just an act of personal revenge, it\u2019s also revenge from the intelligence community at large for Trump\u2019s criticism in the wake of the IC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/18\/spygate-101-a-primer-on-the-russia-collusion-hoaxs-years-long-plot-to-take-down-trump\/\">collusion<\/a> to spy on him and legitimize sham accusations against him during his 2016 campaign. That proved unsuccessful at stopping his election, so now that Trump is teasing a 2024 run, the security state is doubling down. To an extent unthinkable just a few years ago, the FBI and DOJ are proving right the chilling <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/312605-schumer-trump-being-really-dumb-by-going-after-intelligence-community\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">threat<\/a> that Democrat Sen. Chuck Schumer shot at a newly-elected Trump: \u201cLet me tell you, you take on the intelligence community, they have six ways from Sunday at getting back at you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Garland, the DOJ, and the FBI execute their vendetta against the former president, you won\u2019t hear a peep about the glaring partiality of \u201cjustice\u201d from the same people who screeched \u201cconflict of interest\u201d at Justice <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/29\/former-clarence-thomas-clerk-judges-are-never-asked-to-recuse-themselves-over-political-views\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Clarence Thomas<\/a> over his wife\u2019s political views. In Thomas\u2019s case, there is nothing disqualifying about the political beliefs of a judge\u2019s spouse. <\/p>\n<p>As for Garland using the highest office of law enforcement in the country to persecute a political enemy, with an easily imaginable goal of hamstringing his future candidacy \u2014 that foul abuse is disqualifying not just on a personal level, but it disqualifies the legitimacy of the entire Department of Justice and every election it manipulates.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Elle Reynolds is an assistant editor at The Federalist, and received her B.A. in government from Patrick Henry College with a minor in journalism.
