Why, the word of the IRS itself!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese resources are absolutely not about increasing audit scrutiny on small businesses<br \/>or middle-income Americans.\u201d That\u2019s what Commissioner Chuck Rettig <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-utl\/commissioners-letter-to-the-senate.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told senators<\/a> in a letter earlier this month. That\u2019s it. That\u2019s the extent of your guarantee that the newly supersized IRS will be too preoccupied scrutinizing multi-billionaires to spend another second combing over the filings that come from suburban homes with an annual income under $200,000.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s laughable. The Washington Post on Saturday carried the lie, stating in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2022\/08\/06\/inflation-reduction-act-irs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a news article<\/a> that \u201cthe idea\u201d behind the cash infusion \u201cis that the government could bring in more money by examining corporate and high-income returns than it does by pursuing lower- or middle-income taxpayers who make mistakes on their returns or underpay their taxes by small amounts.\u201d The Post went on to excuse the fact that more than half of the agency\u2019s audits target people who make less than $75,000 annually.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe IRS in recent years has grown more dependent on those types of audits,\u201d the article said, \u201cbecause they are relatively inexpensive: They\u2019re automated, and they preserve the agency\u2019s limited personnel resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In other words, government workers at the IRS determined that their $13 billion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/robertwood\/2022\/08\/08\/irs-has-guns-inflation-reduction-act-will-unleash-tough-irs-on-taxes\/?sh=2585e26a5d20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">yearly budget<\/a> was better spent harassing the people who are either at or below <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/data\/developers\/data-sets\/acs-5year.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">median income<\/a>. Why? The answer is obvious: Because it\u2019s easier to shake down a father who owns an auto-repair shop than it is to investigate Mitt Romney\u2019s offshore accounts.<\/p>\n<p>As the Post so helpfully noted, the government worker doesn\u2019t even have to lift his large rear from the seat for the preferred middle-income audits. A computer takes care of it!<\/p>\n<p>All that new money came with no changes to how we file our taxes every year or how collections are enforced. It didn\u2019t simplify or make anything less irritating. It did, however, allow the agency to hire tens of thousands of new government workers, and if you\u2019ve ever been to the DMV or the employment office, you know what a joy dealing with them can be.<\/p>\n<p>At this very moment, I\u2019m in a back-and-forth with the IRS over a filing mistake that wasn\u2019t even mine. The agency has nonetheless declared an owed balance of more than $60,000, thousands of which are penalty fees and interest that the IRS began tacking on for more than a year before I was notified of the error. <\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve submitted the proper paperwork\u2014 a fax machine is the IRS\u2019s quickest correspondence method! \u2014 that should zero everything out and I\u2019ve notified the accountants of the company that contracted me of the issue, which they say they\u2019ve corrected on their end.<\/p>\n<p>After several months of \u201cupdates,\u201d wherein the IRS said it needed more time to investigate, I received one more letter insisting that their claim is accurate. I called. A machine said an agent would call me back. I received a call, which was promptly disconnected. (At least the agent gets to check the box that a call was returned\u2014\u00a0100 percent satisfaction!)<\/p>\n<p>Who has the time to deal with this level of incompetence and disarray?
